The survey was designed as part of the evaluation of the HIV / AIDS prevention strategy in Switzerland. This is a telephone interview survey of the general population repeated at more or less regular intervals with the same methodology for monitoring attitudinal and behavioral indicators relevant to the evaluation of the AIDS prevention strategy in Switzerland: attitudes towards and use of condoms, indicators of sexual behavior, etc. It provides a number of useful indicators for epidemiological and behavioral surveillance and for the definition of prevention measures. The survey also includes a series of questions relating to solidarity with people living with HIV / AIDS. The first survey was conducted in January 1987, the tenth and last in October 2000.

The use of a supervised drug consumption room (DCR) in a newly established low threshold facility in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2002 is analyzed. Two sources of routine data were used: data collected at the first visit by any new client (entry questionnaire) which included some personal details, and data collected on the substances injected at each visit to the DCR. A typology of injection profiles was constructed. Overall, the mean number of injections and days of visits per client over the year was low and cocaine was the main substance injected. However, an important heterogeneity in the use of the DCR was found and five types of clients identified: 1-day clients; standard clients; heroin-oriented clients; high cocaine consumption clients, and newcomers. Typology was associated with some characteristics at the first visit and the drug consumption pattern in the month preceding the first visit was in accordance with the subsequent use of the DCR. This heterogeneity in the use of the DCR highlights the diverse roles of the DCRs in harm reduction.

This article assesses changes over 10 years in the role of pharmacies in the care of drug misusers – needle/syringe provision and methadone treatment supervision – in the Swiss French-speaking Canton of Vaud (636,000 inhabitants, 238 pharmacies). A review of data collected in four surveys (1991, 1994, 1996, 2003) on the provision of sterile material (and methadone treatment supervision in 2003) including all the pharmacists of the Canton of Vaud was conducted, as well as a review of data of the monitoring of needle exchange programmes introduced since 1996 in this canton, and of methadone treatment statistics. In 2003, interviews with pharmacists complemented the survey. Pharmacies play an important role in the 'frontline' services to drug misusers: the provision of needles/syringes to drug users by pharmacies remains important in spite of a decrease in the provision of sterile material by them since the advent of needle exchange programmes, and they are included in the supervision of two thirds of the methadone treatments. However, they do not feel integrated enough in the network of care to drug misusers and ask for more training and better recognition of their role.

The evaluation of the results of the HIV / AIDS prevention strategy for men who have sex with men (MSM) is based on a repeated regular survey of this population in German and French-speaking Switzerland (MSM survey, conducted by IUMSP / UEPP).
Six surveys (1987, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000) make it possible to follow the evolution of the preventive behavior of MSM in Switzerland. These studies all used a questionnaire that was disseminated via the homosexual press and organizations. The main questions have been maintained and new themes have been added based on needs and interests. Between 800 and 1200 questionnaires were returned depending on the year.
It is impossible to assess the representativeness of this type of self-selected sample since the general population surveys (EPSS) (see Project no. 613) do not allow to establish a detailed profile of the homosexual population. It is believed, however, that respondents, as newspaper readers or members of gay organizations, belong to the most sexually assertive, most informed and most motivated segment of the gay population in terms of prevention. Young people are poorly represented in this type of survey. It is possible that participation biases lead to overestimation of protection levels without affecting the validity of temporal trends.
The main socio-demographic characteristics of the samples changed little between 1987 and 2000 (level of education, place of residence, sexual orientation, community affiliation). However, there has been a fairly pronounced aging of the responding population since 1997. The proportion of respondents under 30 years of age decreased by about half between 1994 and 2000.

Insufficient nursing staff levels have been shown to have a negative impact on the quality of care, increasing patient morbidity and mortality. In order to address the issue of how Switzerland can avail itself of sufficient nursing staff in the medium-term and despite ageing of the population, it is necessary to have information on certain key factors.
How many people with training in nursing stay in the health sector throughout their working life and why do other nursing staff leave their original career field? The nurses at work study aimed to discover the reasons why nursing staff remain in or leave their profession or more specifically, the health sector. Its goal is to find ways of retaining more nursing staff in the profession.
Despite tremendous efforts, it proved extremely difficult to get in touch with men and women who had left the healthcare system: today we can only conclude that this group is under-represented in the study. This conclusion is backed up by data from the Federal Statistical Office's Structural Survey).
Nevertheless, the findings of nurses at work are very useful as qualitative research and should be made available to the public and in particular to authorities in charge of staff planning. The results pinpoint which aspects of the nursing profession should be taken into account when making endeavours to retain as many nurses as possible in the health sector.
