This study posits three dimensions of self-report measures of readership based on the extent to which a measure reflects a general predisposition to expose oneself to a magazine or is tied to a specific issue. Confirmatory factor analysis of specific indicants related to the three general dimensions was used to test the resulting measurement model with a readership study conducted in Venezuela (N = 500). The results demonstrate that the specified dimensions provided a good fit to the data, with higher loadings and less measurement error associated with the dimension reflecting the most abstract measures. As predicted, the intercorrelations between the dimensions indicated they reflect differing underlying dimensions of readership.

Central to the study of intercultural communication has been the question of what promotes closer ties between nations. This research replicates and extends a model that specifies three factors (perceptions of homophily, shared interests, and threats), drawn from social distance and systems perspectives, that are posited to have an influence on the desire for closer ties between Brazil and the U.S. Each of the factors have previously been identified as occupying central positions in the development of international relationships. This research extends this model by explicitly incorporating a range of communication channels which are impacted by these factors and which are also hypothesized to effect the desire for closer ties. The results were supportive of the model, with excellent goodness of fit measures for the specified model to the observed data. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for conflict management.

An extension of a model that promotes intercultural communication & closer ties between nations is applied here in the case of Brazil & the US. Three factors (perceptions of homophily, shared interests, & threats), drawn from social distance & systems perspectives, are posited to have an influence on the desire for closer ties between the two countries. The extension involves explicitly incorporating a range of communication channels that are impacted by these factors & that are also hypothesized to affect the desire for closer ties. Questionnaire data obtained from 166 business administration students at the U Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, support the model, with excellent goodness-of-fit to the observed data. Implications for conflict management are discussed. 1 Table, 2 Figures, 1 Appendix, 48 References. Adapted from the source document.
