Two eighteenth century cartographic sources used for the construction of a historical GIS database dedicated to Transylvania

Beyond these inadequacies, it represents an important source, which mentions the motto of the institution, the first visitors on 25 June 1899, headed by the mayor of the city, Friedrich Walbaum and a number of other local personalities of that time. We have signatures of anonymous and famous visitors who crossed the threshold of the institution between 1899 and 1918. Among these signatures we find those of Professor Friedrich Brewerth, the future scientist Hermann Oberth, the collector Karl Haldenwang or the scientist Alexander Tzigara-Samurcaș. The presence of signatures from 1914–1918 also shows that the institution functioned during the difficult years of the First World War.

"Three Centuries Since Baron Samuel von Brukenthal was Born (26th of July 1721 - 9th of April 1803). Baron Samuel von Brukenthal was an outstanding personality, a man of great erudition and refined taste, whose political career culminated with the dignity of Governor of Transylvania, a dignity he held between 1777 and 1787. Brukenthal was the only Transylvanian Saxon who enjoyed this great honor. Living for many years abroad, he got acquainted with Viennese cultural patterns he tried to implement in his own country. As a Transylvanian representative of the Enlightenment, Brukenthal became famous through his major creation, the first museum in the South Eastern part of Europe opened in 1790 to connoisseurs and foreign travelers and in 1817 to the large public. His fine art collection comprised about 1100 paintings belonging to the major European art schools. Besides paintings he also had a rich collection of etchings in copper, a library consisting of about 16000 volumes, rare archeological objects, as well as a numismatic collection and one of minerals. But his sphere of interest was much wider, including a large scale of sciences, the educational system, the musical life of Sibiu, the art of gardening. "Exhibitions of the Painters Otto Fikentscher (1862 Zwickau ‒ 1945 Baden Baden) and Franz Domscheit/Pranas Domsaitis (1873 Kropiens/Gajewo ‒ 1962 Cape Town) in Sibiu. The paper is dealing with two art events, which occured in 1914 and 1924 and were organized by the Art Association Sebastian Hann. The protagonists were the animal painter Otto Fikentscher and the Expressionist Franz Domscheit/Pranas Domsaitis, both esteemed artists from Germany. The only source reporting about the events was the important German daily newspaper from Transylvania, Siebenbürgisch-Deutsches Tageblatt. While Fikentscher's exhibition, which comprised several paintings showing specimens from the Transylvanian fauna, was received with enthusiasm, Franz Domscheit's show, much more difficult to be understood by the provincials (both, critics and public), did not enjoy recognition. Fikentscher intended to come back to Sibiu the same year with another exhibition, an intention impeded by the outbreak of WWI and the events of its aftermath. Although initially some of the intellectuals from Sibiu intended to convince Domscheit to settle in their town in order to enrich the local art scene, the failure of the exhibition made it invalid. The paper also deals with the most important biographical data of the two artists and makes consideration about their artworks.
