"Damage to critical energy infrastructure as a result of terrorism, criminal activity or natural disaster can have a significant impact at both a national and an international level. Reducing the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to protect populations is therefore a high priority for governments worldwide, and high-quality training courses and advanced technologies are imperative in this regard. This book presents edited contributions from the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC) entitled 'Critical Energy Infrastructure Protection: Innovative Structures and Materials for Blast and Ballistic Protection', held as a virtual event from 22 - 25 March 2021. The principal aim of the course was to gather specialists from NATO member and partner countries interested in protecting their critical infrastructure against terrorist attacks, and to share research and practical experience in this field. The meeting provided a forum for participants and speakers to disseminate their recent work, and also served to promote the exchange of ideas and international cooperation among scientists and engineers. The focus was on the physical protection of critical infrastructure in the face of certain types of intentional threat or accident, such as explosions, impacts and blast waves, and the experts shared their experience on topics including the mitigation of risks, classification of vulnerabilities, improvement of resilience, advanced protective materials, dynamic testing of materials and structures, simulations, and numerical prediction methods. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of terrorist attacks"--

The recent global financial crisis exposed the serious limitations of existing economic and financial models. Not only did macro models fail to predict the crisis, they seemed incapable of explaining what was happening to the economy. Policymakers felt abandoned by the conventional tools of the now obsolete Washington consensus and the World Trade Organization's oversimplified faith in free markets. The traditional models for agricultural commodities have so far failed to take into account the uncertain character of the global agricultural economy and its ferocious consequences in food price vo.

This book contains articles arising from the presentations by eleven experts from five countries, delivered at the NATO Centre of Excellence Defence against Terrorism (COEDAT) advanced training course (ATC) entitled Enhancing Cooperation in Defence against Terrorism, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, in September 2010. The aim of this ATC was to stimulate discussion and facilitate interoperability between these five countries and NATO in the fight against terrorism.--Amazon.com

The issue of new threats in terrorism is of constant concern for those engaged in counterterrorism and antiterrorism. Defensive tactics must be constantly updated and improved to keep pace with the never-ending changes and developments in terrorist methods and capabilities. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Centre of Excellence - Defence against Terrorism (COE-DAT) Advanced Training Course (ATC) entitled ""Analysing Different Dimensions and New Threats in Defence against Terror"" held in Kiev, Ukraine, in May 2011. The purpose of this ATC, featuring 12 expert speakers from five co

Many affluent societies around the world are proving an increasingly attractive destination for immigrants who are culturally and linguistically different. This can present challenges to state and local authorities attempting to identify those who pose a terrorist threat. There is a need to understand whether diversity in our communities poses a threat and, since diversity cannot be avoided, how it can be successfully incorporated into countering possible terror related threats. This book presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) held in Antalya, Turkey, in May 2011. The p.

This book contains 16 papers, presented at the workshop: Non-Traditional Security Threats and Regional Cooperation in the Southern Caucasus, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey in October 2009. Whilst the Cold War did not exclude the existence of other threats, such as environmental hazards, organized crime, terrorism, economic instability and illegal immigration, it is only since the emphasis on East-West rivalry and the specter of nuclear confrontation between the two blocs have diminished that these have become articulated as major sources of concern for global security.

Most Western national governments aim to influence individual travel patterns - at least to some degree - through the spatial planning of residential areas. Nevertheless, the extent to which the characteristics of the built environment influence travel behaviour remains the subject of debate among travel behaviour researchers. This work addresses the role of residential-self-selection, an important issue within this debate. Households may not only adjust their travel behaviour to the built environment where they live, but they may also choose a residential location that corresponds to their tr.

Devising a workable housing policy in a country with apparently insurmountable housing problems, presents a great challenge. With the help of an award from UN-HABITAT, Zambian authorities attempted to do just this, in a process which is an ideal candidate for scrutiny. This study analyzes the goals, means and instruments that were used to formulate the policy, as well as its planned implementation. It examines whether the policy could have achieved its goals had it been implemented, and represents a valuable addition to the body of knowledge which can help to evaluate the potential for success.
This book presents the proceedings of the Second International Air Transport and Operations Symposium, ATOS 2011, held at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The focus of ATOS 2011 and this proceedings is on how air transport can evolve in order to continue to add value in the 21st Century, given its incredible impact in the 20th Century. The book covers a whole range of topics: Aircraft Design and Future Concepts; Air Transport Economics; Air Transport, Environment and Safety; Aircraft Lifecycle Value Engineering; Personal Air Transport System (PATS); Airports and Air Traffic.

This publication presents articles on Aging-in-Place, Assistive Technology, Monitoring and Telehealth, Transportation and Mobility, and Design. The section on assistive technology (AT) represents arguably the most mature and generic aspect of technology and aging; except that AT can hardly be regarded really as a specific discipline any longer. Assistive devices and systems command an expansive gamut of technological and engineering specialties, drawing upon mechanical engineering and industrial design at one end of the field and cybernetic systems engineering and brain-computer user interface.
