El objetivo del artículo es analizar el desarrollo de los estudios del trabajo en México tanto desde el punto de la vista de la evolución del campo temático como de su articulación con los cambios sociales y económicos acaecidos en México en las últimas décadas. Mediante una revisión y análisis de textos relevantes se ilustran las formas en que el campo se ha profesionalizado, especializado y ha adquirido una institucionalidad más sólida. Al mismo tiempo se examinan algunas de las limitaciones de los estudios mencionados y se señalan los desafíos a futuro en función de los cambios recientes en los mercados de trabajo y en las ocupaciones. Se subrayan principalmente los cambios que se dan por la irrupción de las tecnologías digitales y por las nuevas regulaciones nacionales e internacionales como las derivadas del T-Mec .

A raíz de la pandemia del Covid-19 durante el año 2020, una gran mayoría de call centers en México trasladaron sus operaciones total o parcialmente a los domicilios de los operadores. Este fenómeno modificó la forma de operar de los call centers y dio lugar a experiencias inéditas tanto en las formas de organización del trabajo como en la propia experiencia de los operadores. En este artículo describimos algunos aspectos de dicha experiencia con base en lo observado en los call center de México por medio de entrevistas con operadores en la Ciudad de México y Tijuana. El fenómeno permite reflexionar acerca de los retos organizativos y normativos de llevar la operación de los call center al terreno del home office en una actividad eminentemente presencial que al mismo tiempo se está viendo afectada por los efectos de la automatización. En función de dicha experiencia, es pertinente preguntarse si la deslocalización observada en los call center será un fenómeno pasajero o los call center formarán parte de las actividades híbridas en las cuales se combine la presencia física en el centro de trabajo con la actividad virtual.
