AbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the interactions between metal ions and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with pH, contact time, compositions of EPS and concentration of EPS. The proteins were the dominated components in EPS of compositions. In particular, the optimal pH for the flocculation of EPS was approximately pH 5.0, except for Hg(II) which is stable in alkaline environments. The heavy removal efficiency of Ni and Al increased from 33 to 81% and 59 to 64%, respectively, when the contact time increased from 0.5 to 1.3 h. Furthermore, the EPS adsorption satisfactorily correlated Freundlich isotherm with the data of Al, Fe, Ni and Zn, with R2 ranging from 0.93 to 0.99, but poorly for Cu, with R2 ranging from 0.81 to 0.88. The results revealed that the flocculating capacity and metal removal ability of the EPS produced by Cloacibacterium normanense represent a good alternative as a bioflocculant and low‐cost adsorbent.
