Whether the gap in per capita incomes between advanced & developing countries will continue to widen indefinitely is questioned. The metamorphosis of postindustrial society--ie, the shift of LF into the service sector--suggests that extrapolation of advanced countries' past high growth rates into the far future may not be a legitimate process. Equally, the rise in historical growth rates among developing countries during the past 15 years points toward a gathering momentum as SE overhead accumulates. A mathematical exercise assuming several combinations of per capita growth rates illustrates how the income gap will continue to widen for several decades--but not everlastingly--even though developing countries enjoy higher growth rates. The turn toward convergence is bound to come, dispelling the widening gap myth. 1 Figure, 1 Table. AA.
