This is an analysis of the media's framing of the Persian Gulf War in mythological categories. We contend that through careful framing the media transformed political and military events into mythical dramas to evoke deeply held beliefs in the masses and achieve political aims. Following Joseph Campbell's model of the "hero's journey," the media-created myth of the Persian Gulf War consisted of four main stages: the hero's quest, the encounter with evil, fulfillment, and return.
