Describes influence of geography on economic development and how unfavorable economic geography of tropical, land-locked developing countries which are far from the sea negatively affects their development compared to that of temperate-zone developed countries and contributes to the gap between North and South. Argues that tropical, land-locked nations of the developed world may never be able to prosper in the global economy since poor geography hinders access to markets and new technologies and that denying geography's impact upon economic development will lead to misguided policies and wasted effort by the international community.
