This dissertation comprises four pieces of economic research which analyze the efficiency of decision making units with regard to the production of undesirable outputs. These studies are motivated by the challenges arising from the phenomenon of climate change. An analysis of automobiles in the German car market is presented comparing different car groups and accounting for the production of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, a network model is proposed which allows to differentiate production and abatement inefficiencies and an approach to endogenously determining the directions for directional distance functions is developed. Moreover, an analysis of the influence of the Kyoto Protocol on the macroeconomic productivity of European countries is conducted.
