AbstractFancy‐dress skating was originally a comprehensive cultural activity integrating entertainment, social contact, and sports, introduced to China from the West in modern times. Since its introduction in China, it has spread widely throughout Beijing, and has undergone considerable variations. Taking Beijing as an example, this study systematically analyses and explains the development and variation of fancy‐dress skating in China which was introduced by the West from the perspectives of public social opinion and organizational participants. Its dissemination and variations are typical examples of cross‐cultural communication of the Western culture in the context of modern Chinese mass communication. It is also the epitome of the diversified interactions between entertainment and society. In modern Chinese history, fancy‐dress skating gradually resonated with historical themes and finally took a new cultural form similar to, but different from what was originally based on the Western contexts.

This paper examines the regional patterns of urbanisation in China and co-operation among Chinese cities. By studying the case of Shanghai, the authors show that the central government's objective is to develop regional urban clusters and to promote exchanges and relations on a regional basis. Regional cities adopt different methods to exploit their geographical advantages. The analysis of the regional development of Chinese cities also underlines a broader question related to the optimum size of cities, and the emergence of city networks. For financial reasons, cities have favoured expansion rather than co-operation. In the Yangtze River Delta, competition is fierce among cities to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and thus benefit from new infrastructures. Regional co-operation among Chinese cities is still not effective, therefore more policies needs to be implemented to increase coordination, as opposed to replication and competition. The way in which cities finance themselves needs to be reformed to reach this objective.

AbstractWhite-collar criminality continues to be a significant issue in countries with differing levels of economic development. This paper provides a comparative analysis of white-collar crime and crises through an examination of the recent peer-to-peer (P2P) online lending crash in China. It considers criminological findings from major United States crises in light of China's P2P online lending market failure through the lens of white-collar crime theory and research. The findings show that fraud was a main contributor to the P2P online lending crash and that various structural factors facilitated financial crimes that caused the collapse of the P2P online lending market. This study indicates that, similar to the U.S. experience, crime-facilitative environments allowed for endemic fraud in China's online lending industry. It suggests that a primarily reactive approach to financial crime is less effective than a proactive system of compliance that includes more comprehensive and transparent financial regulation and law enforcement.
