AbstractSince Hong Kong's handover to China, British newspapers still play an active role in constructing Britain's connections with its former colony. This study elaborates a schema for protests to help better understand protests in general. Based on this schema, the study examined representations of the 2019–20 protests in British newspapers using the approach of corpus-assisted critical discourse studies. The analysis shows that they mainly used the predicational strategy, and emphasized the Chinese government's control of Hong Kong – including the inabilities of the Hong Kong government and police violence – in contrast with the protestors' demands for universal suffrage. They suggested that Britain act as a mediator to shoulder a moral responsibility over Hong Kong. Their attitudes are interpreted with regard to Britain's foreign policies and the dominant ideology cultivated in its historical, socio-political contexts and suggest that the UK journalistic practice regarding Hong Kong issues is political-driven to a great extent.

To promote the development of military and civilian applications for marine technology, more and more scientific research around the world has begun to develop unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) technology with advanced control capabilities. This paper establishes and identifies the model of vector propulsion USV, which is widely used at present. After analyzing its actuator distribution, we consider that the more realistic vessel model should be an incomplete underactuated system. For this system, a virtual control point method is adopted and an adaptive sliding mode trajectory tracking controller with neural network minimum learning parameter (NNMLP) theory is designed. Finally, in the simulation experiment, the thruster speed and propulsion angle are used as the inputs of the controller, and the linear and circular trajectory tracking tests are carried out considering the delay effect of the actuator, system uncertainty, and external disturbance. The results show that the proposed tracking control framework is reasonable.

Abstract
One Country, Two Systems (1C2S) is a framework proposed by China to achieve national unification of territories with different economic and socio-political systems. This study explores the discursive construction of 1C2S in two representative Anglo-American newspapers from January 1984 through March 2020 by taking a topic modeling-assisted critical discourse studies approach. The findings suggest that the foci of coverage change throughout the years, and the reports present an increasingly negative portrayal of 1C2S and growing distrust in its future through the use of a variety of discursive strategies such as predication, intensification, and normalization. In addition to practical concerns of the U.S. and the U.K., these findings are interpreted with regard to the underlying ideological conflicts between socialist China and the two capitalist Western countries. This study also shows the advantage of integrating the topic-modelling approach into discourse studies, especially in terms of diachronic analysis.

AbstractProtests and social movements have become part of Hong Kong's local politics since the 1970s. However, protests against the proposed extradition bill in 2019‒20 turned out to be the most violent political mass movement in Hong Kong after its return to the People's Republic of China in 1997. It not only drew wide international attention but also evoked another round of "news war" over Hong Kong (Lee et al. 2002). This special issue collects six articles which address the representations of the protests in Hong Kong by different parties on different media platforms. Adopting a critical discourse analysis approach, these studies examine discursive strategies employed in media representations of the protests and the ideologies and power struggles at play. It aims to present different perspectives towards the issue and shed light on the complex relations between language, media and politics in the representations of the Hong Kong protests.

Based on the ancient Chinese concept of the unity of Heaven and Man ( , 'tian ren he yi'), guided by principles governing the connections and interdependencies between Heaven, Earth, Man, and the media, and in accord with the coexistence of these four elements in balance and in harmony, this monograph outlines the scope of the study, fundamental concepts and theories, and future directions of research in the interdisciplinary field of the geography of media. The author delves deeply into the themes of time, space, place, landscape, and scale to introduce readers to a wide array of intriguing concepts that add new dimensions to this relatively new academic field. In addition, this monograph presents a history of media geography as it has evolved in the West and in China over the past several decades, and introduces principles and values from traditional Chinese culture that shed light on the nature, direction, and significance of media studies and communication research now being conducted around the globe. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics, job stress, and cognitive and affective conflict faced by Chinese top managers and how this conflict is resolved over multiple rounds of conflict situations.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was designed and submitted to Chinese top managers of firms located in Sichuan Province, PRC. Besides Likert‐type questions concerning demographic characteristics, job stress, and both types of conflict, contextual anchorage method was used to let top managers rank the conflict resolution styles they would prefer for solving a given situation of conflict.FindingsData were submitted to hierarchical regression analysis. It was found that age is in negative relation with job stress and that the higher the education level of top managers, the more cognitive conflict they will experience. In turn, the more cognitive conflict, the more affective conflict will be experienced. In addition, it was found that job stress is in positive association with cognitive conflict. Finally and most importantly, the findings indicated that Chinese top managers are inclined to using integrating to handle conflict. This seems to be generally inconsistent with traditional Chinese culture.Originality/valueThe paper accounted for respective calls that proposed to focus on the antecedent conditions of cognitive and affective conflict. Therefore, a framework containing important antecedent factors of conflict was proposed. As a first attempt, it integrated the relationship between job stress and conflict. Most importantly, and also as a first attempt, however, this study sought to identify the conflict resolution styles Chinese top managers applied over multiple rounds of conflict situations, whereas findings additionally differentiate between affective and cognitive types of conflict.

We drew on conservation of resources theory to investigate the relationships between family embeddedness, work–family conflict, family–work conflict, and employee turnover intention, thereby extending the literature relating to antecedents of turnover intention to the family
domain. Participants were 175 employees of a construction company in China, who completed online surveys. Results showed that family embeddedness was negatively related to work–family conflict and family–work conflict, and that the relationship between family embeddedness and turnover
intention was partially mediated by family–work conflict. Thus, we have obtained preliminary evidence that family-related factors influence individuals' turnover intention. Our findings will help with identifying practical considerations around reducing turnover intention.
