Abstract
The publication of Edith Kuiper's book A Herstory of Economics (2022) brings non-traditional ideas to the core of historical discussions in economic thought. The volume sheds important light on neglected 'herstories' of economics, being one of the first to document the writings and ideas of excluded women economists. This review article offers a critical analysis of the book, building on three key themes that emerge from the processes of exclusion and production/circulation of ideas in economics: (i) the herstory of economics as a genre, and how it contributes to the dissemination of ideas from women economists; (ii) the conceptualisation of power in/outside economics and the barriers of exclusion that exist in the discipline; and (iii) the practices of diversification and inclusivity of women as economists. Through Kuiper's historical analysis, I first discuss how the production of knowledge in economics has been built under exclusionary practices, namely epistemic, evaluative, and ideological. This is followed by the proposal of a three-fold alternative framework for an inclusive economics that builds on existing herstories, which includes elements of engaged pluralism; democracy of knowledge; and inclusivity as both a principle and a professional practice.

This paper analyzes the strategic role played by British classical political economy in constructing new technologies of power. Michel Foucault drew attention to a change that political economists promoted concerning the role of the state, which has been overlooked by historians of economic thought. This paper explores the main arguments provided by the most important British political economists of the 18th and 19th centuries on what concerns population management, State's role and economic dynamics in order to examine Foucault's considerations. Although British classical political economy consolidated the mechanism of markets and economic individuality, thus creating a system of truth that changed economic norms and practices, its discourse also established a political conduct that was responsible for creating mechanisms of control that disseminated new forms of power relations. ; Este artigo analisa o papel estratégico desempenhado pela economia política clássica britânica na construção de novas tecnologias de poder. Michel Foucault chamou a atenção para uma mudança promovida por economistas políticos com relação ao papel do Estado, fato que foi ignorado por historiadores do pensamento econômico. Este artigo explora os principais argumentos fornecidos pelos principais economistas políticos britânicos dos séculos XVIII e XIX no que diz respeito à administração da população, ao papel do Estado e a dinâmica da economia a fim de examinar as considerações de Foucault. Apesar de a economia política britânica ter consolidado o mecanismo dos mercados e o individualidade na esfera econômica, criando assim um sistema de verdade que modificou as normas e práticas econômicas, seu discurso também estabeleceu uma conduta política responsável por criar mecanismos de controle que disseminaram novas formas de relações de poder.

Se brinda una interpretación crítica del papel desempeñado por las recomendaciones políticas y económicas escritas por Adam Smith en La Riqueza de las Naciones, consideradas como las principales fuerzas responsables de la emergencia de la biopolítica. En la medida en que los escritos de Smith acerca de la acción del Estado en las esferas económica y social proporciona un gran avance en la clarificación de cómo debería el Estado lidiar con su población, los argumentos de Michel Foucault acerca de la biopolítica, entendida como una nueva tecnología del poder, define a la economía política clásica como el tipo de conocimiento que es el principal responsable de la racionalización de las prácticas biopolíticas hacia fines del siglo XVIII. Así, una genealogía de la economía política smithiana es requerida para investigar sus condiciones estratégicas de posibilidad y emergencia, así como enfatizar sus orígenes, especificidades, continuidades y discontinuidades, que han sido relevantes para cambiar el poder y la conducta del Estado de una manera estructural.

Studies have pointed out that the value of markets is related to their impact on the character of a society. Karl Polanyi's thesis about social disembeddedness attributed to 19th century economic liberalism the responsibility for consolidating the process of separating markets from society, which changed the dynamics between the state and population when economic rationality began dictating their connections. However, Polanyi only suggested analyses regarding power relations between these three elements and their effects on the social context. This paper argues that Michel Foucault's writings concerning technologies of power and biopolitics complement Polanyi's considerations insofar as they provide an understanding about how biopolitics emerged and how this led to a new posture of the state regarding population care and economic environment regulation.
