The British Overseas Airways Corporation: a history
In a similar style to Comet!: The World's First Jet Airliner and Boeing Group: A History Graham Simons presents us with a colorful, thoroughly engrossing, well-researched and highly illustrated history of The British Overseas Airways Company, from its origin in 1940 to its closure in 1974. The scope of the book takes in the history of the Second World War, examining the ways in which this conflict shaped the development of the airline. BOAC kept wartime Britain connected with its colonies and the allied world, often under enemy fire, and initially with desperate shortages of long-range aircraft. It played an important role in the transportation of passengers during an incredibly fraught and dangerous era. Post-war, jets were brought into the mix and aircraft types such as the de Havilland Comet saw employment. In the 1970s, an Act of Parliament saw BOAC merged with BEA, with effect from 31 March 1974, forming today's British Airways. But the era of The British Overseas Airways Company marked an important bridge between wartime services and the contemporary operations that we recognize today as being part of British Airways' day-to-day working practices. The era 1940-1974 saw a great deal of development change the face of flight in a variety of contexts. By choosing to record the history of BOAC, Graham M. Simons is confronting an era of ongoing interest to students of aviation and historians of mid-Twentieth century history.

Effect of Covid-19 Pandemic to the Fishers in a Coastal Municipality in the Philippines
The fishing industry was not spared by threats of Covid-19 pandemic, despite being considered as part of essential industry. This study determined the effects of the pandemic to the fishing industry, particularly the fishers, in terms of their cost of operation, sales and volume of catch. It also identified their problems encountered and the strategies used to deal with the problems. The study employed descriptive quantitative research design. Respondents, who are the local fishers in a coastal municipality of Bulan, Sorsogon, Philippines, are randomly chosen through stratified random sampling. Survey questionnaire was used and data were analyzed through descriptive statistics. Results revealed that respondents had been heavily affected by the pandemic, particularly in their cost of operation among the three areas of concern. This was due to increase in prices of crude oil/gasoline, food commodities, and fishing gears and equipment. Only few respondents, however, expressed that there are effects on sales and volume of catch. Findings of the study revealed that most common problems were price increase in gasoline/crude oil and fishing gears, as well as price volatility of fish. Study found that respondents took loans (from loan sharks/brokers), repaired their fishing gears by themselves (instead of buying or paying for repair) and attend more to their alternative source of income, to overcome the challenges of pandemic to their livelihood. It recommends that local government must consider providing fishers with relief/loan assistance, particularly during state of calamities, as well as providing livelihood programs and skills training for more sustainable alternative source of income.

Sources of Information and Social Factors as Determinants of HIV Awareness of Residents in Sorsogon, Philippines
With the alarming increase of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases over the recent years, understanding the level of HIV awareness facilitates the development of appropriate prevention programs. The study determined the residents' level of awareness and their sources of information towards HIV. Using 384 residents in Sorsogon province, chosen through systematic random sampling, the study employed cross-sectional descriptive design. A questionnaire consisted of demographic questions, sources of HIV information, and a modified 30-point HIV awareness questionnaire was used to gather data. Results revealed that the residents' level of awareness was moderate, which indicates of basic, yet inadequate, knowledge about HIV. They basically know that it is a sex-related disease, but few knew of its asymptomatic characteristics. The study found that the major sources of HIV information are the mass media, such as TV/radio and the internet/social media. However, it was found that HIV information coming from brochures/flyers, attendance from conferences and government-initiated information dissemination drew higher awareness level than from the common sources. The study revealed that education and income levels have significant relationship with HIV awareness, which indicates that the higher the education level and the income level, the higher the level of HIV awareness. Thus, this study recommends community-based awareness campaign, focusing on the out-of-school youth and the less educated adults, particularly from low-income households.

Friendship as a Political Concept: A Groundwork for Analysis
In: Political studies review, Band 17, Heft 1, S. 81-92
ISSN: 1478-9302
What kind of a concept is friendship, and what is its connection to politics? Critics sometimes claim that friendship does not have a role to play in the study of politics. Such objections misconstrue the nature of the concept of friendship and its relation to politics. In response, this article proposes three approaches to understanding the concept of friendship: (1) as a 'family resemblance' concept, (2) as an instance of an 'essentially contested' concept, and (3) as a concept indicating a problématique. The article thus responds to the dismissal of friendship by undertaking the groundwork for understanding what kind of a concept friendship might be, and how it might serve different purposes. In doing so, it opens the way for understanding friendship's relation to politics.
