Comments penned in the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras leave
few
doubts that many contemporaries believed that women's work (in the
sense of paid employment), particularly that of married women, was bad
for babies. Mothers who were employed in industry received particular
condemnation, accused by their critics of abandoning their children with
the most inadequate of childcare arrangements. As H. Jones, a doctor, put
it in 1894:The children of women engaged in industrial occupations suffer from
the effects of maternal
neglect. They are handicapped from the moment of their birth in the struggle
for existence,
and have to contend not only against the inevitable perils of infancy but
also against perils
due to their neglect by their mothers, and the ignorance of those to whose
care they are
entrusted.Such views did not go unchallenged, however, even at the turn of the
century. Some of Jones's critics, for instance, noting his particular
antipathy to women undertaking industrial occupations, argued that it
was the generally insanitary condition of the towns where women found
industrial employment which underlay the poor survival of their infants,
rather than their mothers' employment per se.

En utilisant des dénombrements il est possible d'examiner l'attitude des couples pour ce qui regarde la fertilité, à l'aide d'un bon nombre de combinaisons des divers emplois. Cet article nous apprend que l'on trouve un lien entre le travail féminin et une basse fertilité à Keighley, dans le West Yorkshire, mais cette relation n'est pas si simple que cela. Des données chiffrées, utilisées en transversales ou en verticales, démontrent que le travail des femmes, leur fertilité, ainsi que la participation de leurs maris au marché de l'emploi entrent tous trois en interaction, qui s'équilibre plutôt par chance que par raisonnement.

This contribution examines the relationship between local population studies and the national picture by considering the example of the Victorian fertility transition in England and Wales. It begins by summarising the history of research into the fertility decline. It then describes a recent project, the Atlas of Fertility Decline, which has used the newly available machine-readable data on individuals from the censuses from 1851 to 1911 to estimate fertility at the level of the registration sub-district. The results from the project can be used to highlight geographical variations in fertility at the regional and local level. Explaining the patterns observed, though, will require detailed local studies. New resources that are being opened up for researchers interested in such issues in their local community, in their county, in their region or in the nation as a whole, make the pursuit and attainment of answers possible. New light can be thrown on local scenes that will each add a piece of the jigsaw which, when completed, will bring a whole new level of understanding of the complex puzzle that is the fertility transition in England and Wales.

Résumé Cet article examine les causes de la mortalité néonatale dans deux communautés très différentes de l'Écosse de la seconde moitié du xix e siècle. Les certificats de décès individuels permettent la comparaison des causes de décès telles qu'elles sont enregistrées par différents médecins et par d'autres informateurs. L'article conclut que la plupart des médecins offraient presque toujours une explication de la mort à consonance médicale, mais elle variait selon chaque médecin en fonction de la nature de ses pratiques, de l'évolution de la terminologie médicale et de ses préférences individuelles. Les autres informateurs, qui n'étaient pas médecins, ne donnaient plus souvent aucune cause de décès, ou suggéraient un terme non médical. Des taux élevés de décès de cause inconnue peuvent donc indiquer une mauvaise couverture médicale et sont plus susceptibles d'apparaître dans les zones rurales reculées ; ils peuvent être accompagnés d'un sous-enregistrement des décès infantiles très précoces et des naissances correspondantes, et d'un « maquillage » de certaines causes de décès. L'article examine l'inhabituelle structure par âge des décès néonataux dans l'île de Skye et conclut que, bien qu'il n'y ait aucune mention du tétanos néonatal dans les registres de décès, il y a une forte probabilité que la maladie ait été présente sur l'île. Les comparaisons de statistiques des causes de décès entre différents lieux et à des moments différents doivent donc être faites avec une extrême prudence.

This article offers a radical reinterpretation of the chronology of control over reproduction in England's history. It argues that, as a result of post–World War II policy preoccupations, there has been too narrow a focus in the literature on the significance of reductions in marital fertility. In England's case this is conventionally dated to have occurred from 1876, long after the industrial revolution. With a wider angle focus on "reproduction," the historical evidence for England indicates that family planning began much earlier in the process of economic growth. Using a "compositional demography" approach, a novel social pattern of highly prudential, late marriage can be seen emerging among the bourgeoisie in the course of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. There is also evidence for a more widespread resort to such prudential marriage throughout the population after 1816. When placed in this context, the reduction in national fertility indexes visible from 1876 can be seen as only a further phase, not a revolution, in the population's management of its reproduction.
