L'article descriu la situació i les particularitats dels infants i adolescents en acolliment residencial a Catalunya dins el context escolar. Partint de les dades recollides recentment en el marc del projecte d'investigació europeu YiPPEE, s'exposen alguns factors que permeten comprendre la vulnerabilitat de la seva situació a partir de l'anàlisi de les aportacions de la investigació i literatura científica sobre les variables que incideixen en les elevades taxes de fracàs escolar que presenten. En l'article es suggereixen algunes línies d'investigació educativa per avançar en la lluita contra el fracàs escolar d'aquest col·lectiu, amb la voluntat de contribuir a situar aquesta problemàtica dins les prioritats del sistema de protecció i d'educació i generar alternatives a la realitat actual que permetin superar la situació de desavantatge social que pateixen aquests infants i adolescents i els obstacles i dificultats que es troben els seus itineraris educatius. Partint de la pre-missa que l'educació formal ha uria de ser, per a aquest col·lectiu, una gran oportunitat per al reeiximent personal i la participació social i posant de manifest que les dades i investigacions sobre la temàtica indiquen que encara queda molt camí per recórrer.

AbstractChildren in residential care are the out‐of‐home population group with the lowest rate of access to postsecondary education. Research aimed at understanding their situation within the school context suggests that besides learning progress and outcomes, subjective experiences should be taken into account. Qualitative research based on a multiple‐case study was designed and carried out in Spain with the aim of deepening the understanding of the individual school experiences of three children in residential care. Each case was analysed from the perspective of the child, the educators and the teachers. Semistructured, one‐to‐one interviews were carried out, and children's files were consulted. The results pointed to emotional distress and accumulated educational delay as common traits of the three children in the study. In shaping each particular school experience, the key themes identified included (1) individual characteristics, (2) the children's academic aspirations and strategies, (3) relationships with peers and teachers, (4) response experienced in school, (5) the complex structure of the residential centre, (6) the sense of belonging to the residential centre, (7) team work and (8) political action and investment in inclusive education.

The subjective well-being of children in residential care is a relevant issue given the practical implications for improving the lives of these children who live in contexts of vulnerability. The question addressed in this respect was: "How does this well-being change over the years"? Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the subjective well-being displayed by adolescents aged 11–14 in residential care in Catalonia (north-eastern Spain) in 2014 to that displayed by adolescents in residential care in 2020. To this end, 572 responses to a questionnaire adapted from the Children's Worlds project (364 from 2014 and 208 from 2020) were analysed with respect to the life satisfaction items. In both 2014 and 2020, the questionnaires had the same wording, and data were disaggregated by gender. No significant differences in means were observed between most of the life satisfaction items in 2014 and 2020, with the exception of satisfaction with friends and classmates and the area where you live, with lower means for these items in 2020. There is a discussion of the possible influence of COVID-19 on these results, while the overall stability of these children's subjective well-being over the years is highlighted.

Recent international research has warned of the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on vulnerable children. However, little is known regarding the in-care population. Objective: To find out how children in residential care perceived the influence of the COVID-19 lockdown in their everyday life, relationships and subjective well-being. Participants and setting: 856 children from 10 to 17 years old (Mage = 15.5, males = 71.2%, females = 28.8%) living in residential centres in Catalonia. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Children responded to an on-line questionnaire administered between June and July 2020. Bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression were used comparing the answers by sex. Results: Better relationships with caregivers (β = 9.156, [4.089–14.22], r2 = 0.244, p < .01) and having a person of trust (ß = 4.588, [2.041–7.134], r2 = 0.244, p < .01) were found to be relevant for children's subjective well-being. For girls, improving their grades (β = 14.86, [8.560–21.15], r2 = 0.234, p < .01) were relevant while boys' subjective well-being was significantly affected by an increase in use of social networks (β = 8.917, [2.733–15.10], r2 = 0.234, p < .01). Conclusions: A gender perspective is needed to help girls in situations of vulnerability. Research on residential care has been well established in the literature. Nonetheless, research drawing from the actual experiences of adolescents is relatively scarce. A qualitative study was designed highlighting the voices of children, analysing their fostering experience, interpersonal relationships, their participation in daily decisions, and future aspirations. The sample included 33 early adolescents in residential care aged 12–14 in Portugal (n = 17) and Spain (n = 16). Results showed that there was agreement in terms of the importance given to education, their satisfaction with the material conditions of residential centre, and their dissatisfaction concerning matters of individuality, autonomy, participation, and socialization.
