Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has received increasing attention over the past two decades as a source of nutrients, trace elements, and ocean pollutants that may alter coastal biogeochemical cycles. Assessing SGD flows and their impact on coastal marine environments is a difficult task, since it is not easy to identify and measure these water flows discharging into the sea. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the significant usefulness of the freely-available thermal infrared (TIR) imagery of the Landsat 8 thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) as an exploratory tool for identifying SGD springs worldwide, from local to regional scales, for long-term analysis. The use of satellite thermal data as a technique for identifying SGD springs in seawater is based on the identification of thermally-anomalous plumes obtained from the thermal contrasts between groundwater and sea-surface water. In this study we use the TIR remote sensing (TIR-RS) imagery provided by Landsat 8 at a regional scale and discuss the principle limiting factors of using this technique in SGD studies. The study was developed in karstic coastal aquifers in the Mediterranean Sea basin during different seasons and under diverse meteorological conditions. Although this study demonstrates that freely-available satellite TIR remote sensing is a useful method to identify coastal springs in karst aquifers both locally and regionally, the limiting factors include technical limitations, geological/hydrogeological characteristics, environmental and marine conditions, and coastal geomorphology. ; This work was partly funded by the Spanish Government (grant nos. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) can be affected by many risks. Those risks are related to different technical and non-technical aspects of recharge, like water availability, water quality, legislation, social issues, etc. Many other works have acknowledged risks of this nature theoretically; however, their quantification and definition has not been developed. In this study, the risk definition and quantification has been performed by means of "fault trees" and probabilistic risk assessment (PRA). We defined a fault tree with 65 basic events applicable to the operation phase. After that, we have applied this methodology to six different managed aquifer recharge sites located in the Mediterranean Basin (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta, and Israel). The probabilities of the basic events were defined by expert criteria, based on the knowledge of the different managers of the facilities. From that, we conclude that in all sites, the perception of the expert criteria of the non-technical aspects were as much or even more important than the technical aspects. Regarding the risk results, we observe that the total risk in three of the six sites was equal to or above 0.90. That would mean that the MAR facilities have a risk of failure equal to or higher than 90 % in the period of 2–6 years. We measure groundwater flux and thermal parameters around a borehole performing a heat dissipation test by heating the armor of a single fiber-optic cable and interpreting the resulting heating curves with a new analytical method. The procedure is similar to thermal response tests, but benefitting from the high spatial and temporal resolution of distributed temperature sensing and lasting longer, so as to measure advective dissipation. Field installation relies on an innovative method in hydrogeology, which is based on the installation of the FO cable in the annular space of the well, close to the aquifer matrix. The proposed new analytical method, expands the traditional Moving Infinitesimal Line Source Model to account for the effects of the field set up and cable materials. In fact, we show that the resulting temperature build-up goes through four periods easy to identify using the log derivative of temperature (dT/d (ln(t))): Initial response, skin (cable insulation), conduction dominated and advection dominated. We test the proposed method in an unconsolidated shallow aquifer with controlled pumping. Surface electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a widely used tool to study seawater intrusion (SWI). It is noninvasive and offers a high spatial coverage at a low cost, but its imaging capabilities are strongly affected by decreasing resolution with depth. We conjecture that the use of CHERT (cross-hole ERT) can partly overcome these resolution limitations since the electrodes are placed at depth, which implies that the model resolution does not decrease at the depths of interest. The objective of this study is to test the CHERT for imaging the SWI and monitoring its dynamics at the Argentona site, a well-instrumented field site of a coastal alluvial aquifer located 40¿km NE of Barcelona. To do so, we installed permanent electrodes around boreholes attached to the PVC pipes to perform time-lapse monitoring of the SWI on a transect perpendicular to the coastline. After 2 years of monitoring, we observe variability of SWI at different timescales: (1) natural seasonal variations and aquifer salinization that we attribute to long-term drought and (2) short-term fluctuations due to sea storms or flooding in the nearby stream during heavy rain events. The spatial imaging of bulk electrical conductivity allows us to explain non-monotonic salinity profiles in open boreholes (step-wise profiles really reflect the presence of freshwater at depth). By comparing CHERT results with traditional in situ measurements such as electrical conductivity of water samples and bulk electrical conductivity from induction logs, we conclude that CHERT is a reliable and cost-effective imaging tool for monitoring SWI dynamics. ; This work was funded by the project CGL2016-77122-C2-1-R/2-R of the Spanish Government. Climate change and future abstraction regimes will influence the availability of groundwater resources. To alleviate any potential negative effects on aquifer systems and dependent industrial and human uses, it is important to develop long-term water management plans. This study evaluates the effect of climate change and future increased groundwater demand from a coastal aquifer located in Kwale County in southern Kenya. A previously calibrated numerical groundwater flow model has been used as an assessment tool to study how future climate (precipitation and temperature variation) and groundwater abstraction changes will affect the aquifer system. The groundwater flow model was built to simulate the period 2010 to 2017, and eight future model scenarios were developed that cover six hypothetical future years. Future groundwater abstraction has been based on current allocations and future estimates made by Kenya's Water Resources Authority. Future rainfall scenarios have been constructed based on a long historical data series (from 1959 to 2017) and the Standard Precipitation Index. The main results show that future abstraction increases due to economic growth exerts a minimum impact compared with expected climate variability. Recharge depends on intense rain events with important implications for both dry periods and for an average rainfall year. A succession of extended dry seasons may affect all water users. However, the groundwater level decline in the local shallow aquifer can reach five meters, with important consequences for local community water supplies. The most significant groundwater decline in drought periods is observed in the area surrounding the pumping wellfields in the deep aquifers, where the effects of drought and significant abstraction are multiplied. However, the effect of increased abstraction on the shallow aquifer system is limited. The characterization of saline water intrusion (SWI) and its hydrodynamics is a key issue to understand submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and manage groundwater resources in coastal areas. To test and compare different methods of characterization and monitoring, a new experimental site has been constructed in a coastal alluvial aquifer north of Barcelona city (Catalonia, Spain). The site is located between 30 and 90 m from the seashore and comprises 16 shallow piezometers organized in nests of three with depths ranging between 15 and 25 m and 4 solitary piezometers. The objective of this paper is to combine different recently developed monitoring techniques to evaluate temporal variations in the aquifer hydrodynamics of the site at different spatial scales before and after the dry season of 2015. At the site scale, fibre optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS), for the first time applied to study SWI, and cross-hole electrical resistivity tomography (CHERT) has been applied. At the meter/borehole scale, electrical conductivity of the formation has been applied not only in a repeated manner ("time lapse"), but also for the first time at relatively high frequency (1 sample every 10 min). CHERT has provided a better characterization of the seawater intrusion than electrical conductivity data obtained from piezometers. The combination of techniques has allowed improving the understanding of the system by: 1) characterizing the extent and shape of SWI; 2) differentiating two different dynamics in the aquifer; and 3) identifying preferential flow paths over different time and spatial intervals.
