THE RHYTHM OF CHANGE

To understand soc processes in history or today, how far is it useful to think in terms of phases, cycles, or curves of learning or growth? The historian, with his microscopic view, thinks poorly of rhythm & cycles. The soc sci'st, looking through his microscope, finds them by the dozen. It is difficult to establish a meeting point of these 2 views, but whoever wishes to understand the shape & timing of change in the longer reaches of history as well as in the micro-analysis of the soc sci'st, would do well to start with a study of the soc learning curve.
