The academic & diplomatic achievements of Ralph Bunche (d. 1971) are remembered. After reviewing the author's affiliation with Bunche, it is stated that Bunche possessed extraordinary stamina (as evidenced by his participation in the Israel-Egypt negotiations over Rhodes), exuded modesty, & demonstrated loyalty to his friends. Even though Bunche is delineated as a passionate & obstinate negotiator, it is stressed that he was highly trustworthy & optimistic & remained dedicated to his humanitarian objectives. Bunche's academic career is then recalled, emphasizing his dissertation on the effects of Western colonialism in Africa, training with several prestigious US anthropologists, & role in creating Harvard U's political science department. It is suggested that Bunche's interest in African studies & colonialism facilitated his transition to a political career. His participation in several UN committees, eg, the UN Truce Supervision Organization, is also covered. J. W. Parker

(SWP-Wgn)
