This paper is an overview of disaster social work and preparing social work students for working with disaster survivors. Disaster has common immediate, and medium‐ and long‐term problems and needs. Experiences from various countries throughout the world suggest a range of helping roles and tasks that social work is suited for. A social work professional has particular expertise in understanding and addressing the immediate, and medium‐ and longer term effects of loss on individuals, families, and communities affected by a disaster. In preparing social work students for working with disaster survivors, social work programs do not introduce enough subject matter or course work about disasters. Practice training, field work, collaboration work, and community service in disaster relief are important academic environments for social work students when learning and practising in disaster settings.

The present study examined the ability of people with substance‐dependence problems to cope with stressful events and refrain from resuming alcohol drinking and the use of drugs. This study specifically examined the length of time that substance abusing‐residents spent in a state‐owned, residential‐based therapeutic community program at Lembang‐Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. A study sample of 68 residents completed a questionnaire with four sections. The results of this study showed no significant differences in the scores rating the coping behavior of the residents according to the length of stay in the program. This study also found no significant differences in the Coping Behavioral Inventory scores of the residents according to the level scores of total Coping Strategy Inventory. It is important for social workers to understand the relationship between the length of stay of residents and their ability to cope so that they can effectively engage in intervention work with individuals with substance‐dependence issues who participate in the therapeutic community.

The objective of this study was to analyse the relationship between family characteristics and the trauma associated with the duration and frequency of sexual assault on child survivors in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. Eighty children who reported sexual assault through a one stop crisis centre in an urban hospital were studied. The main research instrument used was adapted from the trauma symptoms checklist for children. The results of the study show that there are significant differences between the symptoms of trauma of victims according to the frequency of sexual assault, but not according to its duration. Social workers need both to understand and to take note of the relationship of the variables of family characteristics, frequency of sexual assault and trauma effects on the victims in their intervention work with child sexual assault survivors who report having been abused. The implications of these findings are discussed in the context of providing crisis intervention by social workers in Malaysia for child victims of sexual assault.

Child welfare is considered a special area of practice within the profession of social work, and the principles and values of the social work profession generally fit with policies that guide modern child welfare organizations. In most countries, social workers in child welfare agencies have a minimum of a requirement and are registered with a government body that holds them accountable for competent and ethical practice. Child abuse can affect personality growth and later adult behavior. A social worker is closely connected with the study of causes, with treatment and associated research. Underpinning that mission is the belief that all societies have a duty to aim for an abuse-free environment. It needs to be recognized by students that working in this area can be very stressful for the professionals concerned. Interventions require exposure to deviant and stressful situations, which can, over time, affect the mental health of workers themselves. In some situations, dealing with criminal perpetrators can also be threatening and dangerous.

Sources of occupational stress and their impact on job satisfaction and psychological well‐being were examined in a questionnaire survey of 617 Malaysian firefighters. The role of coping strategies and work motivation as moderating factors were also tested. Sources of occupational stress had significant reverse correlations with job satisfaction and well‐being. The hierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the moderating effect of work motivation and coping strategies on job satisfaction and psychological well‐being. The result suggested that coping strategies and work motivation are one of the potential moderating variables between sources of stress and job satisfaction.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health problem that has given the greatest challenge for humanity today. This paper discusses the social changes that have taken place on social network density after COVID-19 hit the world. The social network density discussed is based on Social Network Theory according to the current situation that has hit Malaysia. The methods used are based on document analysis and case analysis from official documents issued by the government. The analysis revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on human health, social and economic. However, seen from the standpoint of social networks, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the emergence of densities in social networks due to increased informal sector involvement in the formation of social networks. This means that, as the number of social networks is formed, the density of social network will increased as defined by Social Network Theory.

The purpose of this study is to explain the bureaucratic culture of state civil servants in the implementation of a national health insurance policy for the poor people in Indonesia. This study used qualitative research methods. Meanwhile, data collection used in-depth interviews, observation, and document study. Data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, conclusions drawing, and verification. The results of this study indicate that the performance of the state civil servants in implementing health insurance still has bureaucratic culture: pragmatic concerning the interests of the Government, bureaucratic in the mechanism for submitting the participation of contribution assistance recipients (beneficiaries), rigidity in the interaction of work tasks, non-participation in the data collection process for the contribution assistance recipients and short-term orientation in achieving membership targets. Therefore, the government must change the mindset of the behavior of the bureaucracy by transforming bureaucratic culture through learning in change management.
