Employment is the highest priority for many people with severe mental illness and it is a central aspect of recovery. Supported employment is a conceptual approach to vocational rehabilitation designed for people with developmental disabilities. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) method described within utilizes the concept, but modifies it for the severely mentally ill.

This comprehensive monograph synthesizes the research on the individual placement and support model of supported employment for people with severe mental illness. It identifies empirical foundations for core principles of the model and reviews the literature on effectiveness, long-term outcomes, and policy implications.

Objectives: Recognizing the limitations of conventional frameworks for identifying evidence-based interventions, we sought to develop a comprehensive set of criteria that would have practical and policy relevance. Methods: We identify nine ideal attributes of a mental health practice (well defined, reflecting client goals, consistent with societal goals, effective, minimum side effects, positive long-term outcomes, reasonable costs, easy to implement, and adaptable to diverse communities and client subgroups). Using a case study approach, we applied these criteria to the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model of supported employment. Findings: IPS generally satisfies all nine criteria, though the evidence is more limited in some areas. Conclusions: This framework provides a template that could be used to evaluate other social work interventions.

The group-based latent trajectory model allows investigators to identify distinctive trajectory groups based on relevant outcomes. Dual trajectory analysis enables examination of the interrelationship between two outcomes simultaneously. This paper describes the application of the group-based dual trajectory model in mental health and substance abuse research. We analyzed two related recovery outcomes: 1) social contact with non-substance abusing friends and 2) stage of substance abuse treatment. We identified four groups for social contact and four groups for substance abuse treatment. We then examined the interrelationship between the two outcomes across the trajectory groups over 10 years. The two outcomes are positively associated longitudinally and evolve in the same direction, although for specific groups, the two outcomes do not covary. By examining dynamic linkages across all trajectory groups between two longitudinal outcomes, the dual model provides a more comprehensive and realistic understanding of the underlying relationships between the two outcomes under investigation.
