We're the best judges of the public interests. Therefore, just out of ordinary morality, we have to make sure that they don't have an opportunity to act on the basis of their misjudgments.

This paper looks into the ways in which eminent Bengali writer Nabarun Bhattacharya used reading as a tool of resistance. Examining his novels, short stories, essays and short journal entries, it attempts to highlight how Bhattacharya used his vast and varied reading as a source of his radical political stance.

To combat global climate change moving towards sustainable, mobility is one of the most holistic approaches. Hence, decarbonization of the transport sector by employing electric vehicles (EVs) is currently an environmentally benign and efficient solution. The EV includes the hybrid EV (HEV), the plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV), and the battery EV (BEV). A storage system, a charging station, and power electronics are the essential components of EVs. The EV charging station is primarily powered from the grid which can be replaced by a solar photovoltaic system. Wide uptake of EVs is possible by improving the technologies, and also with support from the government. However, greenhouse gas emission (GHG) saving potential of the EV is debatable when the required power to charge the EV comes from traditional fossil fuel sources.

For a long time it was held that a close link existed between the modernization of a society and the secularization of the population. Consequently, it was argued that the influence of religion declined in post-enlightenment society. Opposed to the modernization–secularization paradigm is the view that the influence of religion in the public sphere has not declined, but in fact, has increased. Nowadays religion has emerged as a powerful influence in the public sphere all over the world. This is particularly so, in India. Globalization, in all its various meanings, represents more continuity than discontinuity with processes originating in various phases of modernization. The significance of religion in public sphere in traditional and modern India no doubt differs qualitatively but it is always a part of public sphere. This study reveals that in modern India religion may be a separate domain but it is there forever.

AbstractDivisive normalization is a canonical mechanism that can explain a variety of sensory phenomena. While normalization models have been used to explain spiking activity in response to different stimulus/behavioral conditions in multiple brain areas, it is unclear whether similar models can also explain modulation in population-level neural measures such as power at various frequencies in local field potentials (LFPs) or steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) that is produced by flickering stimuli and popular in electroencephalogram studies. To address this, we manipulated normalization strength by presenting static as well as flickering orthogonal superimposed gratings (plaids) at varying contrasts to 2 female monkeys while recording multiunit activity (MUA) and LFP from the primary visual cortex and quantified the modulation in MUA, gamma (32–80 Hz), high-gamma (104–248 Hz) power, as well as SSVEP. Even under similar stimulus conditions, normalization strength was different for the 4 measures and increased as: spikes, high-gamma, SSVEP, and gamma. However, these results could be explained using a normalization model that was modified for population responses, by varying the tuned normalization parameter and semisaturation constant. Our results show that different neural measures can reflect the effect of stimulus normalization in different ways, which can be modeled by a simple normalization model.
