We comment on Liu and Sibley's examination of cross‐national differences in the relationship between perceptions of global warming and intentions to make personal sacrifices for the environment. First, although self‐sacrifice is not necessary for pro‐environmental action, the authors' outcome measure conflates intentions to act and self‐sacrifice. In addition to being problematic at the individual level, this framing may result in cross‐national differences in meaning. Second, for developed nations, the authors seem to downplay the importance of external factors that can affect behavior. We expand by discussing barriers to action that cannot be surmounted by individuals' intentions alone.

Investigates whether women elected to office are denied access to positions of power & authority, focusing on selections to committee chairs in the state legislatures during the 1993/94 sessions, using membership data drawn from the Council of State Governments & National Women's Political Caucus. Comparisons of expected women chairs, summed by eligibility & population, with actual selections show that women's selections as committee chairs met expectations based purely on eligibility & membership ratios. Although women did chair a disproportionate number of education, health, & social services committees, they were not underrepresented as chairs of influential business or fiscal committees. It is concluded that while women may still be underrepresented in politics as a whole, once elected they have equal access to power & authority within the legislature. 4 Tables, 18 References.
