WHILE THE 1948 RACE FOR U.S. SENATE IN TEXAS BETWEEN LYNDON JOHNSON AND COKE STEVENSON HAS RECEIVED MANY REVIEWS, LITTLE ATTENTION HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON THE ROLE PLAYED BY BLACK TEXANS IN THE CAMPAIGN. THE 1948 ELECTION WAS THE FIRST SENATE PRIMARY IN GENERATIONS IN WHICH BLACKS COULD LEGALLY CAST BALLOTS. AS A CONGRESSMAN, LYNDON JOHNSON FOLLOWED THE TRADITION OF HIS ELECTED SOUTHERN BRETHREN IN OPPOSING EVERY FORM OF CIVIL RIGHTS INITIATIVES. HOW JOHNSON RAN AN ANTI-CIVIL RIGHTS CAMPAIGN YET MANAGED TO OBTAIN THE MAJORITY OF BLACK VOTES IN THE EXTREMELY CLOSE 1948 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY IS THE FOCUS OF THIS STUDY
THE FUTURE OF SOCIALISM IN SENEGAL DEPENDS VERY MUCH UPON THE POLITICAL OUTCOME OF THE NEXT TEN YEARS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE CURRENT HEAD OF STATE, LEOPOLD SENGHOR, STEPS DOWN FROM POWER. SOCIALISM IN SENEGAL HAS THUS FAR WORKED WELL LARGELY BECAUSE OF SENGHOR'S CONSUMMATE POLITICAL SKILL, HIS FIRM BASE OF RURAL SUPPORT, & HIS SENSE OF PRACTICALITY
SummaryData showing the relative ages of husbands and wives at marriage in one post-war year are available for many countries, and show that the age distribution of wives for men of a given age varies appreciably from country to country. So also does the age distribution of husbands for a given age of bride. The range of the average ages of marriage partners, from country to country within Europe, is about 2 years for either sex.The first part of the paper investigates how far these variations are associated with the corresponding international differences in the supply of men and women available for marriage. There is some correlation—mostly positive at the younger and older marriage ages and negative at the central marriage ages. The results show an affinity with those of a similar study based on time trends in one country alone: England and Wales. In so far as age distributions at marriage are not directly associated with the supply of people available as partners, international variations may be regarded as the expression of differences in social custom, in economic history or in taste. In the second part of the paper such differences are exhibited and discussed. For a given age of one spouse, partners in most countries are older than in Britain but younger wives are found in some Communist countries and also in the Commonwealth. In the final section, the development of the marriage age experience in two countries—France, and England and Wales—is compared over the period 1911–61, and some interesting differences are revealed, especially in relation to the effects of world wars, of economic depressions and the history of contraceptives. In 1911, appreciably older husbands and younger wives were found in France than in Britain, but today the differences between the two countries are much smaller.
The subject of this talk is the ages of brides and grooms and how the relativity of the ages of such marriage partners has changed in England and Wales over the years. It is a well-documented subject in the sense that square tables showing the combinations of ages of marrying couples have been published annually since the middle of the nineteenth century. It is not well-documented in the sense that these plentiful data have attracted the research interest of demographers, economists or sociologists. Indeed, little work has been done up to now on this subject.
The first major study of the history of British 'bad girls', this book uses a wide range of professional, popular and personal texts to explore the experiences of girls in the twentieth century juvenile justice system. It examines the processes leading to their definition as variously delinquent, defective or neglected and analyses the different possibilities for public and private reform made available to them. It shows how 'bad girls', though few in number, posed a recurring challenge to established generational and gender orders, and questions the popular contemporary belief that 'rising' delinquency among girls has been the product of late-twentieth century social changes.
