This review focuses on recent methodological and technological developments in survey data collection. Surveys are facing unprecedented challenges from both societal and technological changes. Against this backdrop, I review the survey profession's response to these challenges and developments to enhance and extend the survey tool. I discuss the decline in random digit dialing and the rise of address-based sampling, along with the corresponding shift from telephone surveys to self-administered (mail and/or Web) modes. I discuss the rise in nonprobability sampling approaches, especially those associated with online data collection. I also review so-called big data alternatives to surveys. Finally, I discuss a number of recent methodological and technological trends designed to modernize the survey method. I conclude that although they face a number of major challenges, surveys remain a robust and flexible method for collecting data on, and making inference to, populations.

We explore the effect of offering an open-ended comment field in a Web survey to reduce the
threat of sensitive questions. Two experiments were field in a probability-based Web panel in
the Netherlands. For a set of 10 items on attitudes to immigrants, a random half were offered
the opportunity to explain or clarify their responses, with the hypothesis being that doing so
would reduce the need to choose socially desirable answers, resulting in higher levels of
prejudice. Across two experiments, we find significant effects contrary to our hypothesis – the
opportunity to comment decreased the level of prejudice reported, and longer comments were
associated with more tolerant attitudes among those who were offered the comment field.

"In this paper the author reviews three key technology-related trends: 1) big data, 2) non-probability samples, and 3) mobile data collection. He focusses on the implications of these trends for survey research and the research profession. With regard to big data, he reviews a number of concerns that need to be addressed, and argue for a balanced and careful evaluation of the role that big data can play in the future. The author argues that these developments are unlikely to replace transitional survey data collection, but will supplement surveys and expand the range of research methods. This article reviews recent and emerging technology developments in survey research. Recent developments include computer-assisted self-interviewing (CASI) methods using audio and/or video, automated telephone interviewing systems (interactive voice response), and the World Wide Web. These developments are already having a profound effect on survey data collection. Newer technological challenges include wireless applications (mobile web) and portable digital devices. These technologies offer many opportunities to expand the way we think of survey data collection, increasing the ways we can interact with survey respondents and expanding the range of stimulus material that can be used. The implications of many of these new developments for survey data quality are yet to be fully understood. This article reviews the state of the field with regard to emerging data collection technologies, and their implications for survey research.

Computer-assisted interviewing (CAI) has a substantial impact on the way interviewers carry out the task of interviewing. Survey instruments are becoming more complex, necessitating new skills of interviewers. In addition to question wording, the design of CAI instruments is a focus of evaluation and pretesting efforts. This article reports on a variety of research activities related to the usability testing of CAI instruments, focusing both on interviewers (in interviewer-administered surveys) and respondents (in self-administered surveys). The article introduces practices and procedures of usability testing, illustrated with examples from several recent studies in which these methods were applied to the evaluation of computerized survey instruments.

While the Internet allows statistical surveys to be done quicker & easier then ever before, there are still several problems that need to be addressed with this new method. There is the problem of the quality of the surveys that are based on the Web. They vary from a simple set of questions to full-based probability-based designs. There is a need to educate the general public, clients, & sponsors of the indicators of quality of these surveys. Also research needs to be done on the coverage, nonresponse, & measurement error properties of Web-based surveys. Sometimes the restricted population of the Internet does not have significance in surveys, & these instances need to be known. Altogether, more research into this new method of data collection is needed for Web surveys to be used responsibly. 69 References. R. Larsen

Integrating voice inputs into web surveys holds the potential for various benefits, including eliciting more comprehensive and elaborate responses or extracting additional information from vocal tones and ambient sounds. Nevertheless, important challenges persist, including technical problems, privacy concerns, and low participation rates. Given the limited knowledge on this subject, this research note addresses four research questions, distinguishing between two voice input methods (dictation and voice recording) and two approaches to presenting them (providing a choice, or pushing respondents toward voice inputs, with a text alternative offered only in the absence of response): RQ1. What reasons are provided for not opting for voice inputs when they are offered? RQ2. Which variables are associated with the reported use of voice inputs? RQ3. What challenges do individuals answering through voice inputs report? And RQ4. How do respondents evaluate the different methods of answering they employed? Drawing on data from a survey on nursing homes conducted in February/March 2023 within the Netquest opt-in online panel in Spain (1,001 completes), where participants were offered to respond to two experimental questions through voice methods, our analyses reveal that contextual factors and the perceived challenge of oral expression are key reasons for abstaining from voice input responses. Furthermore, individuals who exhibited complete trust in the confidentiality of their responses and those already using voice input in their daily lives were significantly more likely to opt for voice inputs. Among respondents utilizing voice inputs, recurring challenges included contextual constraints and difficulties in verbal expression, alongside technical problems. Despite these hurdles, a majority of participants found answering through voice easy, although a lower proportion reported liking it. These results contribute to the limited literature and can help enhance the effectiveness of voice input surveys.
