After introducing the JALT, the largest of a number of professional language teacher organisations in Japan, the author reviews aspects of the JALT conference held in November 1990. He briefly looks at some papers read at the conference and their themes (teacher education, language attrition, content-based language instruction in Japan, how to teach grammar etc. (DÜI-Sen)

The Japanese government is currently investing an enormous amount of time, effort and money in the improvement of foreign language, especially English language education. According to the author, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is arguably the Japanese government's most innovative initiative in this area. He reviews the development of the programme, accounts for the opposition against it and evaluates its potential under the conditions which exist for students and teachers of English at the present time.
