Based on Richard Pollay's concept that advertising is a "distorted mirror," the author analyzed the content of 483 Chinese television commercials in 1990 and 1995. Results show that "modernity," "technology," and "youth" predominate in Chinese advertising in the 1990s, and the dominance of "quality" in 1990 was superseded by "tradition" in 1995. Symbolic values from both Eastern and Western cultures occurred more frequently in 1995. This change implies that contemporary Chinese advertising is not only a "distorted mirror" but a "melting pot" of cultural values. Results also indicate that the new advertising law taking effect on 1 February 1995 did not reduce Western values depicted in Chinese commercials.

Real estate is a complex and unpredictable industry because of the many factors that influence it, and conducting a thorough analysis of these factors is challenging. This study explores why house prices have continued to increase over the last 10 years in Taiwan. A clustering analysis based on a double-bottom map particle swarm optimization algorithm was applied to cluster real estate–related data collected from public websites. We report key findings from the clustering results and identify three essential variables that could affect trends in real estate prices: money supply, population, and rent. Mortgages are issued more frequently as additional real estate is created, increasing the money supply. The relationship between real estate and money supply can provide the government with baseline data for managing the real estate market and avoiding unlimited growth. The government can use sociodemographic data to predict population trends to in turn prevent real estate bubbles and maintain a steady economic growth. Renting and using social housing is common among the younger generation in Taiwan. The results of this study could, therefore, assist the government in managing the relationship between the rental and real estate markets.

Li Lisan was a prominent figure from the early years of the CPC, an important functionary of the PRC and a victim of the Cultural Revolution. His Russian wife, Yelizaveta Kishkina, lived more than 100 years and left memoirs about their life together from the mid-1930s until their arrest in 1967. The memoirs contain much valuable information on the history of China, the Soviet Union and modern Russia, on the relationship between the two countries at different periods of the 20th century.
Using spiral of silence and social loafing theories, this study proposed a parallel mechanism to explain why people defend their stances on controversial sociopolitical issues through political consumption behaviors (i.e., boycott and buycott) when they read about corporate advocacy messages on social media. A 2 (personal stance: supporting vs. opposing gun control) × 3 (other Instagram commenters' stances: majority supporting gun control vs. majority opposing gun control vs. balanced opinions) between-subjects quasi-experiment was conducted to test the mediating effects of feeling of being in the majority opinion group and feeling of others not contributing enough on boycott/buycott intentions. Results showed that people defend their stances through boycott/buycott actions, because of the feeling of being in the majority opinion group.

The article examines the key problems of the history of Chinese emigration to Russia from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It is shown, that, for a number of reasons, the Russian Empire became one of the important channels of emigration from the late Qing Empire. The conclusion is substantiated, that, in the presence of political migrants, for example, from among the Dungan rebels, the main reason for attracting a large number of Chinese to Russia was purely economic, not political factors.
