Background: Public attitudes towards mental patients and psychiatric treatment are mostly unfavorable, Mental patients tend to conceal their illness or selectively disclose their treatment histories to someone they trust. Aims: To examine the university students' attitudes towards different information regarding a person labeled as mentally ill. Methods: We designed seven descriptions of a mentally ill person of varying past and current treatment histories and randomly assigned 308 university under graduates to read one of the descriptions. Subjects rated their willingness to interact with the hypothetical case using a 19-item social distance scale. Results: Greater social distance was associated with non-medical field of study, no previous contact with the mentally ill and female gender. Subjects without previous contact with mentally ill individuals kept greater distance from a discharged mental patient receiving psychiatric care than a mental patient who did not require medications nor psychiatric follow-up. In contrast, respondents who had previous contact with the mentally ill were more willing to interact with a discharged mental patient receiving psychiatric care comparing with a person labeled as mentally ill alone and a mental patient who had never been admitted to hospital. Conclusions: Implications of our findings in clinical management and designing stigma-reducing programme are discussed.
Psychosis has been viewed with vastly different attitudes in different contexts. Medical professionals frequently assume that patients should have adequate insight into their abnormal experience. "Lack" of insight has been regarded as a characteristic feature of schizophrenic psychosis. However, these experiences have frequently been construed from a non-medically related perspective by the general public. We employed a case-vignette approach to study the opinion of a general public sample concerning attribution, intervention needs and con cordance with medical professionals towards psychotic experience. Ninety eight healthy Chinese volunteers were recruited. Results showed that public opinion only agreed partly with the conventional medical model. Although most subjects agreed that the experience described in the case-vignette was psychological, they did not relate this to psychiatric treatment. Subjects having past contact with psychiatric patients showed a higher degree of agreement with the medical perspective than subjects without past contact. Potential implications of our results on management and health education are discussed.
Background: The study investigated the meaning of recovery to eight people with chronic schizophrenia. Method: A qualitative methodology was used based on a 3-hour focus group. The material was transcribed and analysed into 18 subcategories and 4 categories; namely recovery as a multi-dimensional construct, the relationship of medication to recovery, a sense of hopelessness and helplessness about recovery, factors that promoted recovery. Discussion: Respondents believed that full recovery could not be said to have been achieved until they stopped medication and had a steady job. The support and care of family and friends were also vital, although sometimes problematic. Independent living has a different meaning in Chinese culture. Conclusions: Further research directions are suggested as well as ways to change attitudes to the inclusion of medication in recovery.
Background: This study explored the experience of first-episode psychosis from the patients' perspective and the meanings they attach to the illness and their recovery. Method: A qualitative methodology was used based on a focus group. Audio tapes were transcribed verbatim and three researchers participated in a content analysis that identified four major themes: the meaning of psychosis and psychotic experience; the meaning of recovery; stigma; and having an optimistic view of recovery. Discussion: Participants' view of recovery was broader than that often held by psychiatrists, extending beyond symptom control and medication compliance, and they identified positive features that the experience of illness had brought. Their concerns included the side effects of medication and the fear of their illness being disclosed (to employers, university authorities, acquaintances, etc.) in the face of societal stigma. Conclusion: Ideas about what constitutes recovery need to take account of patients' views and experience in order to emphasize therapeutic optimism rather than pessimism, and to inform treatment contexts and the views of medical staff.

In this report, we describe the motivation and principles of 10Kin1day, together with a public release of 8,000+ MRI connectome maps of the human brain. Ongoing grand-scale projects like the European Human Brain Project (1), the US Brain Initiative (2), the Human Connectome Project (3), the Chinese Brainnetome (4) and exciting world-wide neuroimaging collaborations such as ENIGMA (5) herald the new era of big neuroscience. In conjunction with these major undertakings, there is an emerging trend for bottom-up initiatives, starting with small-scale projects built upon existing collaborations and infrastructures. As described by Mainen et al. (6), these initiatives are centralized around self-organized groups of researchers working on the same challenges and sharing interests and specialized expertise. These projects could scale and open up to a larger audience and other disciplines over time, eventually lining up and merging their findings with other programs to make the bigger picture.
