10 pags., 7 figs., 2 tabs., 2 apps. ; The impact of the photodissociation of HCN and HNC isomers is analyzed in different astrophysical environments. For this purpose, the individual photodissociation cross sections of HCN and HNC isomers have been calculated in the 7-13.6 eV photon energy range for a temperature of 10 K. These calculations are based on the ab initio calculation of three-dimensional adiabatic potential energy surfaces of the 21 lower electronic states. The cross sections are then obtained using a quantum wave packet calculation of the rotational transitions needed to simulate a rotational temperature of 10 K. The cross section calculated for HCN shows significant differences with respect to the experimental one, and this is attributed to the need to consider non-adiabatic transitions. Ratios between the photodissociation rates of HCN and HNC under different ultraviolet radiation fields have been computed by renormalizing the rates to the experimental value. It is found that HNC is photodissociated faster than HCN by a factor of 2.2 for the local interstellar radiation field and 9.2 for the solar radiation field, at 1 au. We conclude that to properly describe the HNC/HCN abundance ratio in astronomical environments illuminated by an intense ultraviolet radiation field, it is necessary to use different photodissociation rates for each of the two isomers, which are obtained by integrating the product of the photodissociation cross sections and ultraviolet radiation field over the relevant wavelength range. ; The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013)/ERC Grant Agreement no. 610256 (NANOCOSMOS). 25 pags., 16 figs., 9 tabs., 2 apps. ; A spectral survey of IRC +10216 has been carried out in the range 11-14 μm with a spectral resolution of about 4 km s_1. We have identified a forest of lines in six bands of C2H2 involving the vibrational states from the ground to 3v5 and in two bands of HCN, involving the vibrational states from the ground up to 2v 2. Some of these transitions are observed also in H13CCH and H13CN. We have estimated the kinetic, vibrational, and rotational temperatures and the abundances and column densities of C2H 2 and HCN between 1R* and 300R* (≃1.5 × 1016 cm) by fitting about 300 of these rovibrational lines. The envelope can be divided into three regions with approximate boundaries at 0.019″ (the stellar photosphere), 0.1″ (the inner dust formation zone), and 0.4″ (outer dust formation zone). Most of the lines might require a large microturbulence broadening. The derived abundances of C 2H2 and HCN increase by factors of 10 and 4, respectively, from the innermost envelope outward. The derived column densities for both C2H2 and HCN are ≃1.6 × 1019 cm-2. Vibrational states up to 3000 K above ground are populated, suggesting pumping by near-infrared radiation from the star and innermost envelope. Low rotational levels can be considered under LTE, while those with J > 20-30 are not thermalized. 8 pags., 5 figs., 3 apps. ; We report on the detection of hot CO2 in the O-rich asymptotic giant branch star R Leo based on high spectral resolution observations in the range 12.8-14.3 μm carried out with the Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES) mounted on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We found ≈ 240 CO2 emission lines in several vibrational bands. These detections were possible thanks to a favorable Doppler shift that allowed us to avoid contamination from telluric CO2 features. The highest excitation lines involve levels at an energy of ≈ 7000 K. The detected lines are narrow (average deconvolved width ≈ 2.5 km s-1) and weak (usually ≤ 10% the continuum). A ro-vibrational diagram shows that there are three different populations, warm, hot, and very hot, with rotational temperatures of ≈ 550, 1150, and 1600 K, respectively. From this diagram, we derived a lower limit for the column density of ≈ 2.2 × 1016 cm-2. Further calculations based on a model of the R Leo envelope suggest that the total column density can be as large as 7.0 × 1017 cm-2 and the abundance with respect to H2 ≈ 2.5 × 10-5. It is based on two terms, a reactive force field term and a many-body term. The reactive force field term accurately describes the fragments, long-range interactions among them and the saddle points for reactions. The many-body term increases the desired accuracy everywhere else. This method has been applied to the OH + HCO → HO + HCO reaction, giving a barrier of 27.4 meV. The simulated classical rate constants with this potential are in good agreement with recent experimental results [Ocaña et al., Astrophys. J., 2017, submitted], showing an important increase at temperatures below 100 K. Methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO) was recently found in hot cores and suggested to exist on comet 67P/CG. The incorporation of this molecule into astrochemical networks requires data on its formation and destruction. In this work, ices of pure CH3NCO and of CH3NCO(4%–5%)/H2O mixtures deposited at 20 K were irradiated with a UV D2 lamp (120–400 nm) and bombarded by 5 keV electrons to mimic the secondary electrons produced by cosmic rays (CRs). The destruction of CH3NCO was studied using IR spectroscopy. After processing, the νa–NCO band of CH3NCO disappeared and IR bands corresponding to CO, CO2, OCN−, and HCN/CN− appeared instead. The products of photon and electron processing were very similar. Destruction cross sections and half-life doses were derived from the measurements. Water ice provides a good shield against UV irradiation (half-life dose of ∼64 eV molecule−1 for CH3NCO in water ice), but is not so good against high-energy electrons (half-life dose ∼18 eV molecule−1). It was also found that CH3NCO does not react with H2O over the temperature range 20–200 K. These results indicate that hypothetical CH3NCO in the ices of dense clouds should be stable against UV photons and relatively stable against CRs over the lifetime of a cloud (∼107 yr), and could sublime in the hot core phase. On the surface of a Kuiper Belt object (the original location of comet 67P/CG) the molecule would be swiftly destroyed, by both photons and CRs, but embedded below just 10 μm of water ice, the molecule could survive for ∼109 yr. ; This work has been funded by the Spanish MINECO under grants FIS2013-48087-C2-1P, FIS2016-C3-1P, and AYA2016- 75066-C2-1-P. 9 pags., 5 figs., 6 tabs. ; Methyl isocyanate has been recently detected in comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P/CG) and in the interstellar medium. New physicochemical studies on this species are now necessary as tools for subsequent studies in astrophysics. In this work, infrared spectra of solid CH3NCO have been obtained at temperatures of relevance for astronomical environments. The spectra are dominated by a strong, characteristic multiplet feature at 2350–2250 cm−1, which can be attributed to the asymmetric stretching of the NCO group. A phase transition from amorphous to crystalline methyl isocyanate is observed at ∼90 K. The band strengths for the absorptions of CH3NCO in ice at 20 K have been measured. Deuterated methyl isocyanate is used to help with the spectral assignment. No X-ray structure has been reported for crystalline CH3NCO. Here we advance a tentative theoretical structure, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, derived taking the crystal of isocyanic acid as a starting point. A harmonic theoretical spectrum is then calculated for the proposed structure and compared with the experimental data. A mixed ice of H2O and CH3NCO was formed by simultaneous deposition of water and methyl isocyanate at 20 K. The absence of new spectral features indicates that methyl isocyanate and water do not react appreciably at 20 K, but form a stable mixture. 10 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., 1 app. ; We aim to study the properties of a particular type of evolved stars, C-rich evolved stars with high expansion velocities. For this purpose we have focused on the two best studied objects within this group, IRC+10401 and AFGL 2233. We focused on determining their luminosity by studying their spectral energy distribution. Also, we have obtained single-dish line profiles and interferometric maps of the CO J = 1-0 and J = 2-1 emission lines for both objects. We have modeled this emission using a LVG radiative transfer code to determine the kinetic temperature and density profiles of the gas ejected by these stars. We have found that the luminosities obtained for these objects (log(L/L ) = 4.1 and 5.4) locate them in the domain of the massive asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs) and the red supergiant stars (RSGs). In addition, the mass-loss rates obtained (1.5 × 10-6 ×10 M yr) suggest that while IRC+10401 might be an AGB star, AFGL 2233 could be an RSG star. All these results, together with those from previous works, suggest that both objects are massive objects, IRC+10401 a massive evolved star with M ∼ 5-9 M which could correspond to an AGB or an RSG and AFGL 2233 an RSG with M ∼ 20 M , which would confirm the existence of massive C-rich evolved stars. Two scenarios are proposed to form these types of objects. We report the discovery of doubly deuterated water (D2O, heavy water) in the interstellar medium. Using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory 10 m telescope, we detected the 1_10–1_01 transition of para-D2O at 316.7998 GHz in both absorption and emission toward the protostellar binary system IRAS 16293-2422. Assuming that the D2O exists primarily in the warm regions where water ices have been evaporated (i.e., in a "hot corino" environment), we determine a total column density of N(D2O) of 1.0x10^13 cm^-2 and a fractional abundance of D2O/H2 = 1.7x10^-10. The derived column density ratios for IRAS 16293-2422 are D2O/HDO = 1.7x10^-3 and D2O/H2O = 5x10^-5 for the hot corino gas. Steady state models of water ice formation, either in the gas phase or on grains, predict D2O/HDO ratios that are about 4 times larger than that derived from our observations. For water formation on grain surfaces to be a viable explanation, a larger H2O abundance than that measured in IRAS 16293-2422 is required. Alternatively, the observed D2O/HDO ratio could be indicative of gas-phase water chemistry prior to a chemical steady state being attained, such as would have occurred during the formation of this source. 24 pags., 11 figs., 2 tabs. ; High spectral resolution observations toward the low mass-loss rate C-rich, J-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star Y CVn were carried out at 7.5, 13.1, and 14.0 μm with the Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph mounted on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy and the Texas Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph on the Infrared Telescope Facility. Around 130 HCN and H13CN lines of bands ν2, 2ν2, 2ν2 - ν2, 3ν2 - 2ν2, 3ν2 - ν2, and 4ν2 - 2ν2 were identified involving lower levels with energies up to ? 3900 K. These lines were complemented with the pure rotational lines J = 1-0 and 3-2 of the vibrational states up to 2ν2 acquired with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique 30 m telescope, and with the continuum taken with Infrared Space Observatory. We analyzed the data in detail by means of a ro-vibrational diagram and with a code written to model the absorption and emission of the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star. The continuum is mostly produced by the star with a small contribution from dust grains comprising warm to hot SiC and cold amorphous carbon. The HCN abundance distribution seems to be anisotropic close to Y CVn and in the outer layers of its envelope. The ejected gas is accelerated up to the terminal velocity (? 8 km s-1) from the photosphere to ? 3R? , but there is evidence of higher velocities (? 9-10 km s-1) beyond this region. In the vicinity of the star, the line widths are as high as ? 10 km s-1, which implies a maximum turbulent velocity of 6 km s-1 or the existence of other physical mechanisms probably related to matter ejection that involve higher gas expansion velocities than expected. HCN is rotationally and vibrationally out of local thermodynamic equilibrium throughout the whole envelope. It is surprising that a difference of about 1500 K in the rotational temperature at the photosphere is needed to explain the observations at 7.5 and 13-14 μm. We have succeeded to scale-up a type of gas aggregation source, called a multiple ion cluster source, for the generation of complex, ultra-pure nanoparticles made of different materials. The high production rates achieved (tens of g/day) for this kind of gas aggregation sources, and the inherent ability to control the structure of the nanoparticles in a controlled environment, make this equipment appealing for industrial purposes, a highly coveted aspect since the introduction of this type of sources. Furthermore, our innovative UHV experimental station also includes in-flight manipulation and processing capabilities by annealing, acceleration, or interaction with background gases along with in-situ characterization of the clusters and nanoparticles fabricated. Tanarro et al. -- 16 pags., 18 figs., app. ; We present a proof of concept on the coupling of radio astronomical receivers and spectrometers with chemical reactors and the performances of the resulting setup for spectroscopy and chemical simulations in laboratory astrophysics. Several experiments including cold plasma generation and UV photochemistry were performed in a 40 cm long gas cell placed in the beam path of the Aries 40 m radio telescope receivers operating in the 41–49 GHz frequency range interfaced with fast Fourier transform spectrometers providing 2 GHz bandwidth and 38 kHz resolution. The impedance matching of the cell windows has been studied using di erent materials. The choice of the material and its thickness was critical to obtain a sensitivity identical to that of standard radio astronomical observations. Spectroscopic signals arising from very low partial pressures of CH3OH, CH3CH2OH, HCOOH, OCS, CS, SO2 (<103 mbar) were detected in a few seconds. Fast data acquisition was achieved allowing for kinetic measurements in fragmentation experiments using electron impact or UV irradiation. Current industrial processes rely on non-abundant metal catalysts, temperatures of hundreds of Celsius and pressures of tens of bars. We propose an alternative gas phase process under mild reaction conditions using only atomic carbon, molecular hydrogen and an inert carrier gas. We demonstrate that the presence of CH2 and H radicals leads to efficient C-C chain growth, producing micron-length fibres of unbranched alkanes with an average length distribution between C23-C33. Ab-initio calculations uncover a thermodynamically favourable methylene coupling process on the surface of carbonaceous nanoparticles, which is kinematically facilitated by a trap-and-release mechanism of the reactants and nanoparticles that is confirmed by a steady incompressible flow simulation. Yebes 40 m radio telescope is the main and largest observing instrument at Yebes Observatory and is devoted to very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and single-dish observations since 2010. The Nanocosmos project, a European Union-funded synergy grant, has enabled an increase in the instantaneous frequency coverage of the Yebes 40 m radio telescope, making it possible to observe many molecular transitions with single tunings in single-dish mode. This reduces the observing time and maximises the output from the telescope. Methods. We present technical specifications of the recently installed 31.5-50 GHz (Q band) and 72-90.5 GHz (W band) receivers along with the main characteristics of the telescope at these frequency ranges. We observed IRC+10216, CRL 2688, and CRL 618, which harbour a rich molecular chemistry, to demonstrate the capabilities of the new instrumentation for spectral observations in single-dish mode. Results. Our results show the high sensitivity of the telescope in the Q band. The spectrum of IRC+10126 offers an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio for this source in this band. On the other hand, the spectrum normalised by the continuum flux towards CRL 618 in the W band demonstrates that the 40 m radio telescope produces comparable results to those from the IRAM 30 m radio telescope, although with a lower sensitivity. Yebes 40 m radio telescope is the main and largest observing instrument at Yebes Observatory and is devoted to very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and single-dish observations since 2010. It has been covering frequency bands between 2 GHz and 90 GHz in discontinuous and narrow windows in most cases in order to match the current needs of the European VLBI Network (EVN) and the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA).
