AbstractWhen selecting a face best resembling a male political candidate, the extent to which selected faces look consistent with positive category stereotypes relates to more favorable candidate evaluations. Because people more positively evaluate feminine versus masculine female faces and also evaluate them as having more stereotypically feminine traits, representing female candidate faces as more feminine may produce a similar relationship. This possibility is examined in the context of the 2020 election in which Kamala Harris became the first woman elected to the Vice Presidency. People evaluated feminine versus masculine representations of Harris's face as reflecting more stereotypically feminine, but fewer stereotypically masculine, traits. People selecting a more feminine representation of Harris's face as best resembling her more favorably evaluated her candidacy even when controlling for explicit evaluations of her gender stereotypicality. This relationship was stronger when Harris's agentic versus communal traits were emphasized. Further, people selecting feminine representations were more ideologically liberal. These findings replicate and extend past work using a real example of a woman on the national political stage. People may have favorably evaluated Kamala Harris in part due to having more feminine representations of her face, thus identifying a novel potential pathway to her historic accomplishment.

Abstract

Objectives
Hypertension or high blood pressure (BP) is one of the 12 modifiable risk factors that contribute to 40% of dementia cases that could be delayed or prevented. Although hypertension is associated with cognitive decline and structural brain changes, less is known about the long-term association between variable BP and cognitive/brain changes. This study examined the relationship between variable BP and longitudinal cognitive, white matter hyperintensity (WMH), gray matter (GM), and white matter (WM) volume change over time and postmortem neuropathology.


Methods
A total of 4,606 participants (32,776 follow-ups) from RADC Research Resource Sharing Hub (RUSH) and 2,114 participants (9,827 follow-ups) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were included. Participants were divided into 1 of 3 groups: normal, high, or variable BP. Linear-mixed models investigated the relationship between BP and cognition, brain structure, and neuropathology.


Results
Older adults with variable BP exhibited the highest rate of cognitive decline followed by high and then normal BP. Increased GM volume loss and WMH burden were also observed in variable compared to high and normal BP. In postmortem neuropathology, both variable and high BP had increased rates compared to normal BP. Results were consistent across the RUSH and ADNI participants, supporting the generalizability of the findings.


Discussion
Damages potentially associated with variable BP may reduce resilience to future dementia-related pathology and increased the risk of dementia more than that caused by high BP. Improved treatment and management of variable BP may help reduce cognitive decline in the older adult population.

Abstract

Objectives
Numerous theories exist regarding age differences in risk preference and related constructs, yet many of them offer conflicting predictions and fail to consider convergence between measurement modalities or constructs. To pave the way for conceptual clarification and theoretical refinement, in this preregistered study we aimed to comprehensively examine age effects on risk preference, impulsivity, and self-control using different measurement modalities, and to assess their convergence.


Methods
We collected a large battery of self-report, informant report, behavioral, hormone, and neuroimaging measures from a cross-sectional sample of 148 (55% female) healthy human participants between 16 and 81 years (mean age = 46 years, standard deviation [SD] = 19). We used an extended sample of 182 participants (54% female, mean age = 46 years, SD = 19) for robustness checks concerning the results from self-reports, informant reports, and behavioral measures. For our main analysis, we performed specification curve analyses to visualize and estimate the convergence between the different modalities and constructs.


Results
Our multiverse analysis approach revealed convergent results for risk preference, impulsivity, and self-control from self- and informant reports, suggesting a negative effect of age. For behavioral, hormonal, and neuroimaging outcomes, age effects were mostly absent.


Discussion
Our findings call for conceptual clarification and improved operationalization to capture the putative mechanisms underlying age-related differences in risk preference and related constructs.

Abstract

Objectives
Despite extensive efforts to study individual differences in loneliness and neurocognitive health, little is known about how within-person changes in state loneliness relate to cognitive performance. This study addressed this gap by examining the association between within-person variation in state loneliness and cognitive performance assessed objectively in daily life.


Methods
Participants were 313 community-dwelling older adults (70–90 years) who reported momentary feelings of loneliness and completed smartphone-based cognitive tests 5 times daily for 14 consecutive days. Mobile cognitive tests assess visual associative memory, processing speed, and spatial memory.


Results
At the day level, average state loneliness levels were negatively related to cognitive performance on the same day and subsequent day. Consistent with the day-level analysis, momentary assessments of increased loneliness were consistently linked to worse cognitive performance on concurrent assessments. However, moments characterized by lower cognitive performance predicted higher levels of loneliness 3–4 hr later (next occasion), but not vice versa.


Discussion
The findings suggest a prospective association between loneliness and cognitive performance, with higher daily loneliness negatively associated with cognitive performance on the same day and predicting worse performance the following day. Notably, within a single day, lower cognitive performance at a given moment predicted elevated loneliness later in the day. This highlights a complex, reciprocal relationship—loneliness predicting and being predicted by cognitive performance depending on timescale.
