[EN] Self-mentions (i.e., first person pronouns and self-citations) have proven to be one of the most powerful ways of rhetorical self-projection in academic discourse and their role in the construction of a self that engenders credibility in more overtly persuasive genres, such as political debates, has been extensively studied, given the vast literature on pronouns in political discourse analysis and specifically on their uses in political debates. To gain a better insight into the ways in which politicians can build a credible ethos through a competent and authoritative presentation of themselves in electoral debates, this paper compares the frequency and rhetorical roles of the self-mentions used by the candidates of the two major political parties (i.e., Democrats and Republicans) during the debates held for the United States presidential election of 2016. The Republican candidates (i.e., Trump and Pence) were found to make a notably greater use of self-mentions than their Democratic counterparts (i.e., Clinton and Kaine). Significant differences were also found in the rhetorical roles most commonly adopted by each politician to convey authority through the use of exclusive pronouns and self-citations. ; This research has been financially supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades (Reference FFI2016-77941-P). [EN] The purpose of this research is to determine and analyse the engagement markers used in the comments on the news published in the online papers El País (Spain) and Emol (Chile). The comments were selected from two different contexts: politics and sports. In this study we consider engagement markers as part of interactional metadiscourse, that is, the elements that involve readers to call their attention or to include them as participants of discourse (Hyland, 2005a). In this research, a corpus of 2,400 comments were compiled and tagged manually and with UAM Corpus Tool. The purpose of the analysis was to identify the metadiscoursal strategies used as engagement markers. The results showed that the writers that comment news in Emol and in El País used a similar amount of engagement markers; on the other hand, significative variation was not identified in the use of engagement markers in comments on politics and sports, although these markers were more frequently found in political comments. ; [ES] El propósito de esta investigación es analizar y comparar los marcadores de compromiso utilizados en los comentarios sobre las noticias de los periódicos digitales El País, publicado en España, y Emol, publicado en Chile, utilizados en dos ámbitos temáticos distintos, la política y los deportes. [EN] The objective of this research is to identify the variation in the use of attenuation strategies used by digital newspaper commentators of El País (Spain) and Emol (Chile) in two contexts, politics and sports. In this analysis we consider attenuation as part of interactional metadiscourse analysis, that is, those elements that indicate the decision of writers to recognize different points of views to not compromise themselves with a proposition (Hyland, 2005). In this study, we compiled a corpus of 2,400 comments; then it was analyzed with the tool UAM Corpus Tool to detect the discourse markers used to attenuate the digital comments to digital news. The results indicated that, on the one hand, the comments from El País included more attenuators than the comments included in Emol. On the other hand, it was observed that there was no difference in the use of attenuators if we consider the two specific contexts analysed, i.e. politics and sports. ; [ES] El objetivo de esta investigación es identificar la variación en los mecanismos de atenuación empleados por los comentaristas de las noticias digitales publicadas en los periódicos El País (España) y Emol (Chile) en dos ámbitos temáticos diferentes, la política y los deportes. [ES] El objetivo de este estudio es identificar la variación cuando se utilizan mecanismos de intensificación en los comentarios en español sobre las noticias digitales que publican dos periódicos: El País (España) y Emol (Chile), y en dos ámbitos temáticos diferentes: la política y los deportes. Para lograr este objetivo, se analizó un corpus compuesto de 2,400 comentarios con la herramienta para el análisis de corpus UAM Corpus Tool. Los resultados obtenidos señalan que, por un lado, los comentarios de los escritores españoles correspondientes al diario El País presentan una mayor cantidad de intensificadores que aquellos escritos en Emol. Por otro lado, se detectó que el ámbito temático no influye de forma determinante en la frecuencia de los intensificadores en ambos sub-corpus. Por último, se distingue la presencia de estrategias relacionadas con el español coloquial conversacional como, por ejemplo, la personalización mediante yo y tú. ; [EN] The main objective of this study is to identify variation in Spanish digital comments on news published in two newspapers: El País (Spanish) and Emol (Chilean). Specifically, we focus on the identification of the intensifying strategies used in the comments on two different topics, i.e. politics and sports. In order to achieve this objective, a corpus composed of 2,400 comments was analysed with UAM Corpus Tools. The results pointed out that the comments written in El País included a higher frequency of intensifiers than those written in Emol. Furthermore, this paper shows that the specific domain of the comments did not influence in the frequency of the intensifiers. Los objetivos de este estudio son, primero, proponer una taxonomía de los marcadores de actitud más frecuentes utilizados en Twitter tras los comunicados del gobierno sobre el coronavirus, segundo, investigar si nos muestran que existe una aceptación del poder en España, así como un respeto a sus decisiones y, finalmente, identificar redes semánticas entre los marcadores de actitud. El corpus recopilado para el estudio está compuesto por los tuits que comentan los comunicados del Ministerio de Sanidad y Salud Pública desde el 12 al 16 de marzo de 2020. Una vez analizados los datos con las herramientas METOOL y GePhi, se observó que se desea una relación con el poder más cercana y que aumentaba la agresividad de los tuits. Finalmente, describimos las conclusiones de este estudio. ; The objectives of this study are to suggest a specific taxonomy for the attitude markers used in Twitter after government decrees about coronavirus and to investigate if attitude markers indicate that power distance is accepted in Spain and if government decisions are respected. Finally, we study semantic webs in attitude markers. The corpus compiled for this study is composed by the tweets to the decrees of the Ministry of Health and Public Health from 12th to 16th March 2020. We analysed the data with the tools METOOL and GePhi. In the results it was observed that Spanish citizens preferred a closer relationship with power and it was noticed an increase in aggressive language. Finally, conclusions were drawn.
