This paper highlights a series of forms of community participation in the case of a Romanian rural community that has a well-defined cultural identity and carries out numerous activities aimed at creating cultural vitality. The main purpose of the paper is to highlight a series of data and reflections derived from the field research carried out over the past years using the ethnographic method, as well as to interpret research data on the basis of a theoretical model developed by Mataritta-Cascante and Brennan (2012).

Photovoice is a participatory technique used in sociology for presenting research results in form of visual stories. It can be a valuable tool to increase awareness and participation of citizens in local-based processes related to environmental education. This paper highlights some advantages of using photovoice as a visual participatory technique in improving environmental education, exploring some evidences from recent literature and presenting a case study conducted in Brasov, Romania. The case study is an example of how photovoice can be successfully used in working with social science students, in order to improve their professional skills for promoting local-based environmental education initiatives.

The objective of the research is to describe the return migration process in a Romanian rural community; we will focus here on the identity changes experienced by community members who recently returned from Italy. We conducted this instrumental case study in Drăguş, Brasov County, where we performed extensive observations. We identified all the persons who have permanently returned from Italy and studied the perceived identity effects of their migration experience. We also collected data through narrative interviews; the data was analyzed by means of coding techniques, and the results are ethnographic reflections of return migration focusing mostly on the way the identity of our participants was shaped by the experience of migration and returning to the original community.

Between March 2018 and February 2019, an interdisciplinary team from Transylvania University of Brasov developed a project to create an inventory of intangible cultural heritage resources in the Făgăraș Land. Almost without exception, the first theme addressed by the inhabitants who were interviewed was that regarding the group of lads. The prestige of the group of lads (caroling bachelors) who in the villages in the Făgăraș Land could be capitalised on by reactivating the status and traditional assignments of the group over the entire year and thus, reactivating and/or reinvigorating other heritage resources. Local differentiations between folk costumes with the same structure represent another significant heritage resource.
