Veröffentlicht wird die Arbeit eines westlichen Sowjetologen, S. Koen, in der er die Frage untersucht, ob der Stalinismus ein Ergebnis der kontinuierlichen Entwicklung der bolschewistischen Bewegung in Sowjetrußland nach 1917 sei. Er analysiert unterschiedliche Interpretationen der sowjetischen Geschichte wie die Theorie der "direkten Linie", die den Bolschewismus mit der stalinistischen Politik verbindet, den Totalitarismus-Ansatz und andere Konzeptionen in der westlichen Sowjetologie, die auf der These des kontinuierlichen Übergangs vom Leninismus zum Stalinismus basieren. Der Autor widerlegt die Argumente der Kontinuitätsthese, indem er ihre begrifflichen Konstrukte herausarbeitet und explizit zum Ausdruck bringt, daß die historische Entwicklung des Stalinismus nicht als ein kontinuierlicher Prozeß, sondern nach seinen verschiedenen Entwicklungsphasen zu erforschen sei.
