By adoption the first Law on Waste Management of the Republic of Serbia in 2009 ('Official Gazette RS', No. 36/09), the necessary preconditions for introduction the order into the subject area were created. The Law on Waste Management was amended in 2010 ('Official Gazette RS', No. 88/2010). According to the guidelines of the amended Law on Waste Management, the Government of the Republic of Serbia has adopted the Regulation on disposal of hazardous waste on landfills ('Official Gazette RS', No. 92/2010). The Government has defined with this Law, for the first time, three categories of waste disposal and all parameters necessary for selection appropriate location, design and monitoring of future waste disposal. The Government regulation on landfills represents a harmonization of domestic legislation with the European Union in the field of environmental protection and waste management and with actual Directive 1993/31/EU.

The biggest polluters of water resources are industrial waste water produced after various production technological processes. Within the industrial complex RTB Bor, the waste water are generated during the copper production process with negative impact on the environment, reflected in long-term contamination of soil with which they come into contact and accumulation of heavy metal ions in it, in inflow into surface water and mixing with ground water and their pollution. Directly, the most vulnerable are the Bor River and Krivelj River belonging to the catchment area of the River Timok that still flows into the Danube and therefore presents wider environmental problem of international character. The aim of this work is a characterization of industrial waste water generated in RTB Bor and their impact on the pollution of nearby water flows. The waste water samples were analyzed from the production process of sulfuric acid, production of copper sulfate, electrolytic copper refining and treatment plant of anode slime. Detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of waste water samples was carried out from these production processes and high content of heavy metal ions (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Ni, Bi, Cd, etc.) was established, that highly exceeds the limit values defined in the legal regulations of the Republic of Serbia. Neutralization of the waste industrial water was performed and after chemical characterization of purified water, it was found that they belong to the IV water category, according to the legislation of the Republic of Serbia. Based on chemical composition, a proposal for treatment with valorization of present copper was given.

The paper shows previous studies of geological investigations the Old Flotation tailing dump in order to assess its impact on the quality of surface and ground water. Also, an overview of the EU legislation in the field of water protection is shown. The aim of this paper is to consider the problem of the Old Flotation tailing dump and comparison the current condition with requirements of the EU legislation in the field of water protection.

The possibility of application of low-cost and easily available materials such as cardboard or sawdust for the heavy metals removal from the acid mine water was investigated. The sawdust was obtained from oak and fir-wood. Those materials were tested on the real acid mine wastewater that contained copper, iron, zinc, nickel, and manganese in the concentrations above the maximal allowed level. The adsorption degrees of those elements were investigated. The results were shown that the iron was mechanically removed. The results of chemical analysis of effluent obtained by the use of sawdust from fir-wood indicate that the values for iron and nickel ions were lower than allowed values by the legislative direction. The highest value for copper adsorption degree of 98.31% was achieved at pH value of 7.94. Content of manganese in the effluent and at the end of process, was near the initial value. Using the sawdust obtained from oak as the adsorption material, zinc and manganese concentration in the effluent was near the start values and copper and iron content was decreased but the values were higher than allowed. Using the cardboard, the copper adsorption degree was up to 95 mass%, iron content was under the limit value for the applied chemical detection method. The content of the manganese was not changed and the content of the zinc was decreased but the concentration was over the maximum allowed value. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2011191]
