THIS AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT THE TERM DEMOCRACY IMPLIES THAT THERE IS A COHERENT SET OF NORMS THAT ARE ACCEPTED BY EVERYONE IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY. HIS RESEARCH EXPLORES THIS IDEA IN A PRELIMINARY WAY. THE MAIN CONCERN OF THE STUDY WAS THE NATURE OF THE REPRESENTATIVE LINKAGES BETWEEN LOCAL COUNCILLORS AND THEIR CONSITUENTS IN A NUMBER OF COMMUNITIES IN SCOTLAND.

THE ARTICLE STUDIES THE GROWTH IN THE NUMBER OF BRITISH FACTIONS SINCE 1945 WITH EMPHASIS ON FACTIONS WITHIN PARLIAMENTARY PARTIES. IT EXAMINES THEIR IDEOLOGY AND GOALS AND ATTEMPTS TO DISCERN THEIR ORIGINS. IT CONCLUDES THAT ALTHOUGH THE NATURE OF THE PARTY IN SOME WAY ENCOURAGES THE GROWTH OF FACTIONS, THE MORE IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THE CHANGES IN SOCIETY THAT THE FACTIONS ARE A REFLECTION OF.

Responds to an earlier analysis by Kavanagh which criticised the basic thesis of McKenzie's British Political Parties. Believes that Kavanagh made some important criticisms of McKenzie, but it is still true that power in the Labour Party is similarly distributed to power in the Conservative Party. (Abstract amended)

A discussion of the movement for Andalusian autonomy in Spain. Although not culturally as distinct as Catalonia or the Basque country, Andalusia has clear & peculiar characteristics. During the last years of the Franco dictatorship, a separate socialist party (Partido Socialista Andaluz) was established in the region, which received wide support. Although Andalusia gained autonomy, the party virtually disappeared. It is suggested that one of the most important assets of the party was the personality of its leader, Rojos Marcos; with his eclipse, it also went into decline. 4 Tables. Modified AA
