Presents an overview of the development of polling organizations in the United States in the 50-year period covered by Public Opinion Quarterly, 1937-87. By 1937, the 3 pioneers in the field had already established their organizations, Gallup and Roper in 1935 and Crossley during the 1936 presidential election. These organizations grew out of the commercial market research sector that had developed in twentieth-century America, especially after World War I. (Abstract amended)
