Information gathered from the French living in New Orleans when the census of 1850, 1870 and 1900 respectively was taken made it possible to define that population's characteristics and its evolution during the half century of rapid growth, when the French-speakers were no longer a majority. Only one of the noteworthy aspects of this development is presented here, namely, the closeness that existed between the French immigrants and their German counter parts. They shared the same residential sections as well as the same professions. And they had a marked propensity for marrying each other.
