The blackboard debate: Hurdles, options and opportunities in school integration
From 1991, white state schools may exercise choice regarding the admission of black pupils. If they decide to do so, they can either remain a state school, or change their status to either a state-aided or a private school. In this book, the author describes government policy on education and the economic and social pressures this has been subjected to. After discussing the different attitudes to integration and the underlying concerns which influence these, she discusses the shortcomings as well as the potential of the different options for integration. The viewpoints of a wide range of people are presented, and the book concludes with a description of the possible role different interest groups could play in facilitating integration
