Poverty is now a first-order security problem for the developed nations of the West. Poverty contributes to violent conflicts, helps the spread of diseases, threatens global income growth, & causes environmental damage. An alignment of resources, cooperative action, & policies are needed to reverse the momentum of pervasive poverty. However, this alignment is only possible when renewed appreciation for the development mission takes place. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted in 2001 by the UN General Assembly, collectively commit nations to address a series of development challenges & specific targets to be met by 2015. The author argues that: 1) most of the US increase in foreign assistance appropriations has little impact on poverty; 2) the absence of coordination within the US government reduces our ability to adopt a strategic approach to development; & 3) the lack of coherence among development, finance, & trade policies undercuts the effort to reduce poverty. Failing to recognize that the development process is vital will lead to more poverty with all its manifestations. Adapted from the source document.
