In presenting some of the findings of a study of informal sector enterprises in Dhaka, the author discusses the different types of activities they are engaged in, the employment status of the workforce, the participants' earnings etc. He concludes that the informal sector is neither a secondary labour market nor merely a sponge to absorb the city's residual labour and this sector offers considerable opportunities for advancement to people from poor backgrounds.
