Ethno-national conflict in Aceh struggling for independence from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia was waged for almost three decades since 1976. The military approach taken by the Government of Indonesia (GOI) for years was unable to bring the conflict to an end. Since then, conflict resolution through diplomatic mechanism was initiated by involving third party mediator. The massive natural disasters, earthquake and the tsunami that hit the region in December 2004 prior to the peace agreement between Government of Indonesia and GAM (Free Aceh Movement). The parties committed to agree the memorandum of understanding which known as Helsinki MoU. This research questions whose party more powerful is, Government of Indonesia or Aceh The question can be answered by using Critical Discourse Analysis as a tool. The linguistics instruments can show power which is dominated or not by one of the parties. Based on the findings in this study, it is confirmed that no one from two parties is more powerful than another. It is shown that the power between GOI and GAM is balanced. In other words, based on the analysis of MOU Helsinki, their position is adequate.

COVID-19 information is massively reported by media and social network focus not only on the spreading and infection but also on the government's prevention in handling the pandemic. Thus this study, under Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (CDA) and by using Appraisal System as a tool for textual analysis, is aimed to gain insight and understanding regarding how Indonesia government's prevention of COVID-19 in the beginning of pandemic crisis are presented in media, specifically The Jakarta Post. The result shows to some extents. Firstly Appraisal System used in the text analysis level presents that the news report published by The Jakarta Post is overridden by the voice placing the government as the target of negative JUDGMENT. Secondly, Appraisal System analysis leads to explanatory critique of the news text regarding reader positioning. The lack of representations of other choice positively or neutrally on the text strongly give the dynamic-negative meaning to the target audience.

This study aims to investigate the memes created by Nurhadi-Aldo, a fictional presidential candidate. Data is collected from Nurhadi-Aldo's Instagram profile. The descriptive qualitative approach was used and the sampling procedure carried out was purposive sampling. To analyze the data and to uncover the hidden values, the three-dimension analysis proposed by Fairclough (2001) was used. The first dimension was textual analysis where the textual and visual sign of the presidential memes were examined. The second dimension was the analysis of the discursive practice surrounding the production of Nurhadi-Aldo memes. And the last was the sociocultural practice analysis that deals with how Indonesian internet users reacted to this viral phenomenon. The result points out that the memes represent the visualization of public social critics toward a political condition in Indonesia. With regards to the content creator, Nurhadi-Aldo's memes further indicate the scepticism value of Indonesian youth. These findings further confirm that the function of the meme is not limited to entertainment purpose only, but also to deliver political criticism. Hence, it is expected that the findings will give more insights into how certain values can be delivered through the use of everyday text, such as memes.

This research was aimed at analyzing the speeches of Donald Trump and of Hillary Clinton in the USA Presidential candidates' debates as instruments of power. The data is a presidential final debate video of Trump and Clinton made in September 2016 which has been converted into a transcript. The data analyzing technique is divided into three steps: 1) describing the context, 2) analyzing the illocutionary acts, and 3) analyzing the power dimensions. The results of this research show that the speakers use the speech act as an instrument of power with classifications of representative, commissive and expressive. In this regard, the researchers found that the speakers demonstrated their power to try to convince the voters in their society to trust them to be the president. The research results also showed that the usage of speech in debate as an instrument of power can influence the voters especially on Election Day.

This descriptive study aims to identify and analyze the types of appraisal found in the media conference between the Indonesian government and the Australian government in 2013. Appraisal is the evaluation of available types of attitudes delivered within a discourse. There are three types of attitudes in appraisal: affect, judgment, and appreciation. Affect is a means of how individuals express their feelings in discourse. Judgment is divided into personal judgment and moral judgment. Personal judgment includes individual's admiration or criticism, while moral judgment includes individual's praise or condemnation. Appreciation concerns individual's attitudes towards surrounding things. The result shows that there is no negative appraisal proposed by the representatives of both governments. Both representatives agreed to continue and restore the almost damaged bilateral relations after the surveillance scandal conducted by the Australian government to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. ; Penelitian deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis macam-macam appraisal yang ditemukan dalam konferensi media antara pemerintah Indonesia dan pemerintah Australia pada tahun 2013. Appraisal merupakan evaluasi dari jenis-jenis sikap yang disampaikan dalam sebuah wacana. Terdapat tiga jenis sikap dalam appraisal, yaitu: affect, judgment, dan appreciation. Affect adalah cara bagaimana individu mengungkapkan perasaan mereka dalam wacana. Judgment terbagi menjadi personal judgment dan moral judgment. Personal judgment berupa kekaguman atau kritik seseorang, sedangkan moral judgment berupa pujian dan hukuman seseorang. Appreciation menyangkut sikap individu mengenai hal terkait. Hasil studi menunjukan bahwa tidak ada appraisal negative yang diusulkan oleh perwakilan dari kedua negara. Keduanya sepakat untuk melanjutkan dan memulihkan hubungan bilateral yang hampir rusak setelah skandal penyadapan yang dilakukan oleh Pemerintahan Australia terhadap Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

This descriptive research discusses the use of discourse markers in a diplomatic setting between the governments of Indonesia and Australia during a Joint Press Conference between Indonesia-Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers. The particular aims of this research are to identify and analyze forms of discourse markers employed by the representatives of each government and describe the most frequent discourse markers used by these representatives. The data were collected from the transcript of the Joint Press Conference between Indonesia and Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers (2+2) Dialogue. The data are classified based on the typology of discourse markers and analyzed to identify their function within the diplomatic discourse. The data are input into the AntConc corpus analysis toolkit for analysis. The results show that the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Indonesia employed three forms of discourse markers, namely textual discourse marker, interpersonal discourse marker, and cognitive discourse marker, whereas the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Australia only applied textual discourse marker and cognitive discourse marker. Both representatives employed textual discourse markers more frequently than other forms of discourse markers. Discourse markers partially control how meaning is constructed by showing turns between speakers, joining concepts, displaying attitude, and finally, controlling communication. By understanding the discourse markers in ministerial dialogues, spectators can learn to find clues in the change of direction in their talks to better understand the conversation that affects the policies and citizens of both countries involved.

This study aims to describe how the Middle East Media represent the Indonesian government and the executed Indonesian migrant workers in the case of Indonesian migrant workers executions in Saudi Arabia. The data are analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis focuses on the representation of social actors by Van Leeuwen (2008). This theory examines how the social actors are presented or excluded in the representation. In addition, the analysis of this study is also supported by the lexical analysis based on Richardsons theory (2007) of analyzing news text: level of analysis. This study uses descriptive analysis method since the data are analyzed based on the indicators, categories or strategies in the theories which are used to analyze the data. This study found that the Indonesian government is represented as the party who has done many efforts to save Indonesian migrant workers from the executions abroad but on the other side, Indonesian government is also represented as hypocritical party since Middle East Media nominate the Indonesian government as the party that still implement the death penalty. Generally, the lexical analysis show that the executed Indonesian migrant workers are represented as the cruel killers although several media present another information which show their reasons to do the crimes such as self-defense and suffering mental-illness.

This study explores the representation of social actors, both in the Indonesian and Australian governments on the Trade and Economic Partnership through Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The issue focuses on both governments partnership published in the Jakarta Post during 2014-2018. Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an approach, this article analyses the media exclusion and inclusion strategies of social actors. By applying descriptive qualitative methods, result shows that the dominant strategy is the inclusion strategy. The use of inclusion strategy indicates specifications, individualization and categorization of positive reaction and support of The Jakarta Post towards the Indonesian government on trade and economic partnership between Indonesia and Australia. However, the use of exclusion strategy is aim to hide the social actors in the discourse and to divert reader's attention to the object rather than the subject discourse. ; Artikel ini mengeksplorasi representasi aktor sosial pada pemerintah Indonesia dan Australia mengenai Kemitraan Perdagangan dan Ekonomi melalui pendekatan Analisis Wacana Kritis dari Leeuwen. Permasalahan kemitraan yang merupakan fokus kedua pemerintahan selama kurun 2014-2018 terpublikasi dalam media berbahasa Inggris the Jakarta Post. Analisis Wacana Kritis digunakan sebagai pendekatan untuk mengkaji strategi media terkait eksklusi dan inklusi aktor sosial. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, hasil menunjukkan bahwa strategi inklusi lebih dominan dipergunakan. Penggunaan strategi inklusi mengarah kepada spesifikasi, individualisasi dan kategorisasi reaksi positif dan dukungan the Jakarta Post terhadap pemerintah Indonesia dalam masalah kemitraan perdagangan dan ekonomi antara Indonesia dan Australia. Sementara, penggunaan strategi eksklusi bertujuan untuk menyembunyikan aktor sosial dalam pewacanaan dan cenderung mengarahkan perhatian pembaca lebih pada objeknya, daripada subjek pewacanaan.

After being recognized as a legitimate form of marriage in various countries, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the American Constitution guarantee the marriage of same-sex. It is the syllabus of same-sex Marriage in the United States that become the object of the research. This thesis aims to identify the attitude types and clauses constituent of syllabus constructed by same-sex marriage proposer in the United States and examines how attitude types in the syllabus of Same-sex Marriage in the United States indicates the meaning and relation with the readers. The theory proposed by Martin and White of Appraisal system (2005) based on attitude types is used to support the analysis. The research found that the attitude types in same-sex marriage syllabus there are 92 affect, 54 judgement, and 58 appreciation. Based on the attitudinal types in this research, the same-sex proposers feeling indicates they are being discriminated because their citizenship rights have not been fulfilled. It can be seen from the most choice of the word "harm" that indicates the existence of a condition that there is a rule injustice. Therefore the same-sex proposers need to be protected their right to marry the same-sex couples. Validation the right of same-sex marriage, will give them a guarantee to live safely. If the right cannot be avowed, the same-sex actor will be suspected as a criminal by the state. The same-sex proposers believe this is harmful decision. Because they think that marriage is an important right that everyone can procure it, including the same-sex orientation. This right cannot be parting from the other right and same-sex marriage right must be legalized by the state. Therefore the state must to treat the citizen equally.

In 2011, the Australian government suspended live cattle exports to Indonesia, following footage of brutal slaughter of animals in some of Indonesian slaughter houses. The two countries give their statements relating to this case. These statements are certainly meant to bring about a certain purpose and expectation. It can be said that there are diplomatic activities, in the form of those statements, which have been done by both countries. The object of this research is utterances coming from the representative from Indonesia and Australia. And the aim of this research is to know what face concept and politeness strategies committed by Australian and Indonesian representatives on their statements. The research method used in the research is descriptive qualitative by applying Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness strategies. Another supporting theory is context theory by McManis, et al. (1987). The contexts that influence the utterance are physical, linguistic, epistemic and social contexts.

Now days, tourism is counted as a large industry that could support the government income. Since tourism is important, it is essential to promote it by online and offline media. Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was claimed as a large corpus of language is the source of the data taken in this paper. Many researchers do their research on tourism, but it is limited research on the word tourism related to corpus. The aims of the research are, firstly, to describe the distribution of the word "tourism" in COCA since 1990 up to 2019 including across different contexts and secondly, to describe the pair of the word "tourism" in COCA since 1990 up to 2019 including its context. The research method implemented is a mixed method design, that quantitative and qualitative methods are combined. It was reported, firstly, from 9833 corpus containing the word "tourism" found in COCA, the highest number is newspaper followed by academy, magazine, spoken, web, fiction, blog, TV, and movie. Secondly, from the highest number to the smallest number of the subtypes of the word tourism are related to nature, culture, animal, place, sport, history, prostitution, health, religion, science, memory, crime, movie, and charity.
