Nuclear hegemony: America in Micronesia

In 1947, the US took control of the 2.000 islands and 150.000 inhabitants of Micronesia under a UN "strategic trust". Between 1946 and 1958, 66 atomic and hydrogen bombs were exploded at Bikini and Enewetak in the Marshall Islands. Recent evidence suggests that the 1954 "Bravo" hydrogen bomb (1.200 times the Hiroshima-A-bomb) was deliberately set up to purposely irradiate several "downwind" populations for long-term radiation studies, which have been underway for 33 years by the US government. A Compact of Free Association will replace the UN trusteeship, and will give the US 30 years use of Kwajalain Atoll in the Marshalls, an important "Star Wars" laboratory. Also, Belau and other islands will form a defensive "fallback arc" to replace the possible loss of the Philippine bases beyond the 1991 expiration date. Economic dependency has been foisted upon the Micronesians to insure US presence well into the 21st century. (International Political Science Assoc.)
