This book evaluates the characteristics and developments in Africas financial systems, including monetary policy, structured finance, sustainable finance and banking, FinTech, RegTech, SupTech, inclusive finance, the role of regulation in dealing with banking crises, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Africas financial systems and how to reform the post-COVID-19 financial systems. It is made up of contributions from scholars in finance and economics as well as financial market practitioners. Banking and the financial markets play a significant role in the growth of various economies. Although a number of handbooks on banking and finance exist, they mainly focus on Europe, America and Asia. Banks and financial markets in Africa are confronted with different challenges and therefore present a unique case to understand Africas financial systems. A number of African countries have experienced banking crises and it is important to examine these issues as well as the regulatory regimes required to address them. This edited book contributes to the limited texts in the area by providing a comprehensive resource on banking and finance for students, scholars, researchers, policymakers, and financial market practitioners. It contains various theoretical and empirical chapters on banking and finance in Africa. Joshua Yindenaba Abor is a financial economist, Professor of Finance and former Dean at University of Ghana Business School. He is an External Fellow at the Centre for Global Finance, SOAS University of London. He has held Visiting Scholar positions at the IMF and is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana. Charles Komla Delali Adjasi is a Professor of Development Finance and Economics at Stellenbosch University Business School, where he was former Head of Development Finance Programmes. He is an Afreximbank Research Fellow, a Visiting Professor at ENSEA Cote dIvoire and was previously a Visiting Professor/Scholar at University of Groningen and the IMF.

AbstractIn light of the quest to achieve economic development without compromising environmental quality, we empirically examine whether institutional quality (INSQY) can help moderate the possible harmful effects of foreign direct investments (FDI) and industrialisation on environmental quality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We utilise the Driscoll and Kraay standard error estimation technique on a panel of 45 SSA countries from 2000 to 2019. The results indicate that FDI and industrialisation generally have a significant harmful effect on the environment. Our findings reveal that INSQY directly promotes environmental quality. Notably, the results confirm that INSQY plays a stimulating role in mitigating the adverse effects of FDI and industrialisation on environmental quality. The results further validate the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in SSA. These findings contribute to environmental sustainability literature and offer policymakers insights on how INSQY can enhance environmental quality. Our empirical results are also robust to different estimation techniques, such as the two-stage least squares. We recommend SSA leaders strengthen institutional capacities, enforce environmental regulations, and implement strict policies to ensure environmental quality while promoting industrialisation and FDI inflows.

AbstractDespite the momentous rise in concentration and market share of foreign banks in overall bank assets in Africa, rigorous empirical work(s) examining their effect on financial sector development in Africa is hard to find. In view of this, the study seeks to investigate the moderating role of institutions/governance on the foreign bank presence‐financial development nexus. Employing the two‐step system generalized method of moment for a panel dataset of 28 economies in Africa over the period, 2000–2018, the results show that foreign bank presence has a positive effect on financial development. Also, the study finds evidence that foreign banks in host countries increase financial development in the presence of quality institutions. The study recommends improvement in institutional quality, which will help foreign banks to promote financial development.
