; The Chinese East Railway played an important role in the development of Harbin, especially had a great influence upon the population of the city. With the construction of the railway, the Russian nationals and Chinese in Harbin increased day after day. After the October Revolution, the Railway became a tool for the whites retreating and attacking the Soviet Russians. From 1918 to 1921 there appeared a second high tide of Russian nationals increasing in number. After the northern part of the Railway was sold to Japan, the Russian nationals went back home. The railway was a cause of the increase of Harbin's citizens, but it, at the same time, brought about the gender imbalance of the citizens and more Russians than Chinese for a long time. In addition, the people who were in engaged in transportation and trade accounted for a great percentage. In the 1930s, as a center of politics, finance and culture of Dongbei China, Harbin had the features of typical consumption city.
