; In the Jacksonian era, the struggle between political elites was conducted with using technologies such as "PR". The activities of the American press particularly intensified during periods of presidential election campaigns. It distributed and popularized party slogans and campaign promises, created political myths, stereotypes and cliches, provided circulation of gossip and rumors. Fairly common practice was not only embellishment of the candidate and his program (if there were any) in the party press, but also blackening the political opponent. In this case, often the true reality didn't matter; the only important thing was to achieve political victory. The Democratic press, especially The United States Telegraph, tirelessly argued that Andrew Jackson was best prepared for high positions, while newspapers and magazines of the Whigs tried to discredit their opponent. But the victory was Jackson's, as the Democratic "PR" technologies proved more effective.
