The World Wide Web has become a common platform for interactive software development. Most web applications feature custom user interfaces used by millions of people every day. Information architecture addresses the structural design of information to build quality web applications with improved usability of content, navigation, and findability. One of the most frequently utilized information architecture methods is card sorting—an affordable, user-centered approach for eliciting and evaluating categories and navigable items. Card sorting facilitates decision-making during the development process based on users' mental models of a given application domain. However, although the qualitative analysis of card sorts has become common practice in information architecture, the quantitative analysis of card sorting is less widely applied. The reason for this gap is that quantitative analysis often requires the use of customized techniques to extract meaningful information for decision-making. To facilitate this process and support the structuring of information, we propose a methodology for the quantitative analysis of card-sorting results in this paper. The suggested approach can be systematically applied to provide clues and support for decisions. These might significantly impact the design and, thus, the final quality of the web application. Therefore, the approach includes proper goodness values that enable comparisons among the results of the methods and techniques used and ensure the suitability of the analyses performed. Augmented Reality (AR) technology has, despite many applications in the research domain, not made it to a widespread end user market. The one exception is AR applications for mobile phones. One of the main reasons for this development is technological constraints of the non-mobile phone based systems - the devices used are still neither mobile nor lightweight enough or simply not usable enough. This thesis addresses the latter issue by taking a holistic approach to the development and evaluation of AR applications for both single user and multiple user tasks. The main hypothesis is that in order for substantial wide spread use of AR technology, the applications must be developed with the aim to solve real world problems with the end user and goal in focus. Augmented Reality systems are information systems that merge real and virtual information with the purpose of aiding users in different tasks. An AR system is a general system much like a computer is general; it has potential as a tool for many different purposes in many different situations. The studies in this thesis describe user studies of two different types of AR applications targeting different user groups and different application areas. The first application, described and evaluated, is aimed at giving users instructions for use and assembly of different medical devices. The second application is a study where AR technology has been used as a tool for supporting collaboration between the rescue services, the police and military personnel in a crisis management scenario. Both applications were iteratively developed with end user representatives involved throughout the process and the results illustrate that users both in the context of medical care, and the emergency management domain, are positive towards AR systems as a technology and as a tool in their work related tasks. The main contributions of the thesis are not only the end results of the user studies, but also the methodology used in the studies of this relatively new type of technology. The studies have shown that involving real end users both in the design of the application and in the user task is important for the user experience of the system. Allowing for an iterative design process is also a key point. Although AR technology development is often driven by technological advances rather than user demands, there is room for a more user centered approach, for single user applications as well as for more dynamic and complex multiple user applications.

The current paper explores designing a web information retrieval system regarding the searching behavior of users in real and everyday life. Designing an information system that is closely linked to human behavior is equally important for providers and the end users. From an Information Science point of view, four approaches in designing information retrieval systems were identified as system-centered; user-centered; interactive and cognitive designs. However, there is a lack of research related to possible relationships between information behavior and information systems design to date. Traditionally, designers used human factors but not necessarily human behaviors while designing information systems. Therefore, there are few systems designed by information scientist aiming to regard or support the human information behavior. There are now new techniques and methodologies such as Contextual Design and Participatory Design to fill the gap. Implementing a behavioral approach to designing information systems are of interest and importance in terms of modern information technologies like social software, web 2.0, mobile phones and internet websites. New methodologies and research frameworks are proposed that place user location, attention and behavior as their main issues.

Context: In order to ensure usability, it is necessary to schedule activities and methods to be applied throughout different stages of the development process. There exists a substantial number of usability methods to be applied in user-centered software development. However, the application of each usability method largely depends on specific constraints that should be closely considered. Even so, these constraints are not always known beforehand, remaining unidentified or under uncertainty at early stages of the project. Objective: This paper presents an approach to automatically recommend 43 usability methods depending on the project's stage and constraints. Our approach deals with uncertainty to recommend usability methods regardless of the completeness of the information available, which makes it suitable for enhancing initial scheduling. Besides, a supporting tool intended to schedule and guide on usability methods is presented in order to systematize the recommendation mechanism. Method: To validate our approach, we present two application scenarios demonstrating the suitability of the mechanism, including also an expert analysis to observe the recommendation appropriateness in terms of recommendation gap. Also, a user testing was accomplished to evaluate the usability of the approach with key users. Results: A low recommendation gap was observed (<2.5%) and, according to the results obtained in the user testing, high percentage values for usefulness (82.38%) and satisfaction (87.89%) were obtained. The user evaluation also reported high values concerning other dimensions such as ease of use (89.00%) and ease of learning (92.38%). Conclusions: Results obtained helped answer main research questions, demonstrating that it is possible to create a mechanism to recommend usability methods according to a software project's constraints, even under uncertainty, and also affirm that it is possible to systemize the recommendations with a scheduling tool being satisfactory for key stakeholders, denoting acceptable levels of recommendation appropriateness, usefulness, and overall usability. ; This work was partially supported by the Spanish Government [grant number TIN2014-52129-R]; and the Madrid Research Council [grant number S2013/ICE-2715]

In order to develop an hybrid approach to the Reverse Engineer of Web applications, we need first to understand how much of the control logic of the user interface can be obtained from the analysis of event listeners. To that end, we have developed a tool that enables us to perform such analysis, and applied it to the implementation of the one thousand most widely used Websites (according to Alexa Top Sites). This paper describes our approach for analyzing the user interface layer of those Websites, and the results we got from the analysis. As companies increase the quantity of information they provide through their Web sites, it is critical that content is structured with an appropriate architecture. However, resource constraints often limit the ability of companies to apply all Web design principles completely. This study quantifies the effects of two major information architecture principles in a controlled study that isolates the incremental effects of organizational scheme and labeling on user performance and satisfaction. Sixty participants with a wide range of Internet and on-line shopping experience were recruited to complete a series of shopping tasks on a prototype retail shopping Web site. User-centered labels provided a significant benefit in performance and satisfaction over labels obtained through company-centered methods. User-centered organization did not result in improved performance except when the label quality was poor. Significant interactions suggest specific guidelines for allocating resources in Web site design. Applications of this research include the design of Web sites for any commercial application, particularly E-commerce.

Garbage is one of the problems in Village, at some points there is a buildup of rubbish which is quite alarming and pollutes the surrounding environment. Therefore the government intention of Village in the next few years seeks to overcome these problems by building a technology-based waste bank, one of which is the use of applications as an alternative in carrying out environmental management facilities and communication media with the community in providing environmental information. Before entering into the development of software systems the user interface design process is very important to do, because the design of the user interface is designed so that the designed software system can present the appearance of an application by showing the flow and the workings of the application. So that if the design is detailed, the coding process carried out by the developer can be achieved mechanically. In designing the user interface conducted in this study the User Centered Design (UCD) method is used in which the process will involve potential users in the early to late stages of development so that potential users can provide input regarding the interface designed. To find out the level of success of the user interface design that is designed can be seen in the measurement results in a user interface that meets aspects of usability and user experience. The results of this study are to design the user interface design of an Android-based garbage bank in village that pays attention to aspects of usability and meets 6 values of user experience.
