A socio-economic interpretation of louis bachelier : the theory of speculation and le havre's trading milieu.
Bom in Le Havre in 1870, in a family of wine merchants, Louis Bachelier is considered as a founder of mathematical finance, and the promoter of significant advances in the field of the theory of relativity. His work, discovered in the United States after his death, has been quite influential. The aim of this article is to contextualize the work of this forerunner and to situate the development of his ideas in a socio-economic framework. Reciprocally, Bacherlier's ideas help us to renew our vision of the functioning and evolution of the milieu which formed his background : the traders in Le Havre at the end of the 19th century.
