Abstract
Artificial freezing was used to evaluate diploid and triploid apple cultivars from the All Russian Research Institute of Fruit Crop Breeding at Orel throughout three winters. The studied apple varieties were developed by breeder E. N. Sedov and cytological analysis was carried out by cytologist G. A. Sedysheva. In early winter, all cultivars exhibited high tolerance to cold. In mid-winter buds and wood were severely damaged, while bark was more resistant for most cultivars. Basic components of hardiness were estimated: component I - frost resistance at -25 °C in the beginning of winter; component II - maximum value of frost resistance at -40 °C developed by plants during hardening; component III - ability to retain the hardened condition at -25 °C after a period of three-day thaw at +2 °C; and component IV - the ability to restore frost resistance at -30 °C after repeated hardening and three-day thaw at +2 °C. During late-winter thaws, buds suffered from frosts, while the bark and wood retained frost hardiness. Late in winter all cultivars demonstrated high resistance to repeated frosts. Triploid cultivars exhibited the highest level of cold hardiness of vegetative buds, bark and wood of annual shoots throughout the winter; these cultivars included 'Zhilinskoye', 'Vavilovskoye', 'Osipovskoye', 'Patriot', 'Sinap Orlovski', 'Spasskoye', 'Turgenevskoye', and diploids 'Bolotovskoye', 'Sokovinka', and ''Ranneye Aloye'.

Abstract
Adaptation and tolerance to changes in heat and cold temperature are essential for survival and proliferation in plants and animals. However, there is no clear information regarding the common molecules between animals and plants. In this study, we found that heat, and cold tolerance of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is oppositely regulated by the RNA-binding protein EMB-4, whose plant homolog contains polymorphism causing heat tolerance diversity. Caenorhabditis elegans alters its cold and heat tolerance depending on the previous cultivation temperature, wherein EMB-4 respectively acts as a positive and negative controller of heat and cold tolerance by altering gene expression. Among the genes whose expression is regulated by EMB-4, a phospholipid scramblase, and an acid sphingomyelinase, which are involved in membrane lipid metabolism, were found to play essential roles in the negative regulation of heat tolerance.

Understanding of thermal adaptation mechanisms in yeast is crucial to develop better-adapted strains to industrial processes, providing more economical and sustainable products. We have analyzed the transcriptomic responses of three Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, a commercial wine strain, ADY5, a laboratory strain, CEN.PK113-7D and a commercial bioethanol strain, Ethanol Red, grown at non-optimal temperatures under anaerobic chemostat conditions. Transcriptomic analysis of the three strains revealed a huge complexity of cellular mechanisms and responses. Overall, cold exerted a stronger transcriptional response in the three strains comparing with heat conditions, with a higher number of down-regulating genes than of up-regulating genes regardless the strain analyzed. The comparison of the transcriptome at both sub- and supra-optimal temperatures showed the presence of common genes up- or down-regulated in both conditions, but also the presence of common genes up- or down-regulated in the three studied strains. More specifically, we have identified and validated three up-regulated genes at sub-optimal temperature in the three strains, OPI3, EFM6 and YOL014W. Finally, the comparison of the transcriptomic data with a previous proteomic study with the same strains revealed a good correlation between gene activity and protein abundance, mainly at low temperature. Low temperature at sowing delays both germination and plant emergence, and can reduce establishment of beans planted early in the growing season. The objective of this work was to identify potential runner bean germplasm with tolerance to low temperature and to assess the role of this germplasm for production and breeding. Seeds of 33 runner bean accessions were germinated in a climate-controlled chamber at optimal (17°C-day/15°C-night) and at sub-optimal (14°C-day/8°C-night) temperature. The low temperature tolerance was evaluated on the basis of germination, earliness, ability to grow and vigor. Differences in agronomical characters were significant at low temperatures for germination, earliness, ability to grow and early vigor except for emergence score. The commercial cultivars Painted Lady Bi-color, Scarlet Emperor, the Rwanda cultivar NI-15c, and the Spanish cultivars PHA-0013, PHA-0133, PHA-0311, PHA-0664, and PHA-1025 had the best performance under cold conditions. ; Research was supported by the projects AGF2000-1613 and RF03-024-C6-2 from the Spanish Government. ; Peer reviewed

Tramp ant species present a set of adaptations to their urban habitats, and there is a paucity of knowledge about how they interact with abiotic factors, like temperature. Temperature is well known to interfere with insect activity. The present study evaluated the temperature tolerance of three important tramp ant species: Monomorium floricola ( Jerdon), Monomorium pharaonis (Linnaeus) and Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nylander). Tested temperatures were 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50.C. Ten repetitions with 20 workers each were done with each temperature and analyzed species. The number of dead workers was recorded every hour over a total of 8 hours. All procedures were done using thermal incubators at relative humidity within 50-95%. Workers of M. pharaonis proved more tolerant to high temperatures (30-50.C) than workers of M. floricola and T. bicarinatum. The higher the temperatures tested, greater was the recorded ant mortality, with temperature 50.C being fatal to all species after 1h of exposition. The least tolerant species to temperatures below 20.C was T. bicarinatum. Low temperatures tested were not fatal to any of the tested species.

Abstract
The cold-tolerance of 'Kristall' (Euro-Amur-American origin), 'Dostoyniy' and 'Krasnostop AZOS' (interspecific hybrids of Euro-American origin) grapevine varieties in the winter conditions of South Russia is characterised by the second (true dormancy) and third (induced dormancy) winter-resistance components. Here we used a complex approach to estimate plant adaptation to abiotic stress factors. We used the gravimetric method for humidity assessment and water content, spectral analysis for detection of the protein level and pigments and capillary electrophoresis to determine the level of carbohydrates, Krebs cycle organic acids, phenolcarbonic, ascorbic acids, and amino acids. The obtained results allow to suggest various mechanisms of adaptation of the studied varieties to the winter period stressors. The water content of shoots, levels of protein, amino acids, proline, sugars and the sum of phenolcarbonic acid and ascorbic acid are the most informative indicators of grape plants frost-resistance in the climate conditions of the Anapa–Taman region.

This work aimed to analyze the physicochemical properties of cellulose from OPT used in the fabrication of CMF and evaluate the efficacy of the hydrogel CMF as an encapsulant for L. fermentum InaCC B1295 stored at room temperature and in the refrigerator. The Kjeldahl method was used to evaluate the protein content; the gravimetric method was used to determine OPT's ash, moisture, and fiber contents; the Soxhlet method was used to determine the fat content carbohydrates were computed using the difference method. The levels of holocellulose, lignin, and cellulose were also determined. Viability, acid and bile resistance of strain B1295 were evaluated at various temperatures for 35 days. The most abundant component of OPT fiber was cellulose, followed by hemicellulose and lignin. XRD examination revealed that OPT cellulose has a crystal index of 83.40%. FTIR analysis was used to detect the stretching vibrations of the –OH group on cellulose at 3419.03 cm-1. CMF hydrogel from OPT sustained L. fermentum InaCC B1295 survival for up to 28 days at room and refrigerated temperatures. At acidic conditions and in the presence of bile, the viability of L. fermentum InaCC B1295 was excellent, with a drop in cell population of less than 0.2 log CFU/g over 35 days at room and refrigerated temperatures. CMF obtained from OPT can be used as an encapsulant to maintain viability, acid resistance and bile of probiotics. There is still a need for research into the usage of CMF from OPT in combination with other encapsulants to extend the storage life of L. fermentum InaCC B1295. 10 páginas, 5 tablas, 5 figuras ; Tolypocladium cylindrosporum is a fungus which has been isolated from soil, from asymptomatic plants as an endophyte, and has been shown to be pathogenic to several species of arthropods. The objective of the present work was to study a collection of T. cylindrosporum strains in order to evaluate the characteristics of this fungus as a bioacaricide. The pathogenicity of five different strains of T. cylindrosporum was tested against two tick species, Ornithodoros erraticus and Ornithodoros moubata. Both tick species were susceptible to all the fungal strains. Mortality was greater for O. erraticus, and differed among the five developmental stages of the ticks tested, and among the fungal treatments. Mean mortality rates were close to 60% for O. erraticus, similar to those reported for other entomopathogenic fungi used for this purpose. The responses of eleven different strains of the fungus to 22ºC and 30ºC were also studied. Significant differences in temperature tolerance occurred among the strains, and growth inhibition was observed at 30ºC. Several mycoviruses were found infecting five of the eleven strains. Further rises in ambient temperature can reduce or completely inhibit potato tuber production, with damaging consequences for both producer and consumer. The aim of this study was to use a genetic screen based on a model tuberization assay to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with enhanced tuber yield. A candidate gene encoding HSc70 was identified within one of the three QTL intervals associated with elevated yield in a Phureja–Tuberosum hybrid diploid potato population (06H1). A particular HSc70 allelic variant was linked to elevated yield in the 06H1 progeny. Expression of this allelic variant was much higher than other alleles, particularly on exposure to moderately elevated temperature. Transient expression of this allele in Nicotiana benthamiana resulted in significantly enhanced tolerance to elevated temperature. An TA repeat element was present in the promoter of this allele, but not in other HSc70 alleles identified in the population. Expression of the HSc70 allelic variant under its native promoter in the potato cultivar Desiree resulted in enhanced HSc70 expression at elevated temperature. This was reflected in greater tolerance to heat stress as determined by improved yield under moderately elevated temperature in a model nodal cutting tuberization system and in plants grown from stem cuttings. Our results identify HSc70 expression level as a significant factor influencing yield stability under moderately elevated temperature and identify specific allelic variants of HSc70 for the induction of thermotolerance via conventional introgression or molecular breeding approaches. ; Publisher PDF ; Peer reviewed
