This article explores the relevancy of Greek myth in Latin American theatrical practice, through the diverse existent versions of Antigone in its dramaturgy, but concentrating particularly on two works: Antígona Vélez, by Leopoldo Marechal, and The passion according to Antígona Pérez, by Luis Rafael Sánchez. Additionally, the tradition of political theater in the continent that is found behind this phenomenon is revised and the aesthetic task that this exercise represents. This article proposes that all model or strategy is embedded in a specific historical context and it is founded on principles consistent with the interpretive community of which comes. This, at the same time, is inserted in a specific historical situation and in the context of cultuml proposals consistent with the political and ideological conflicts of his time. This hypothesis is supplemented by the following: model emerged from another historicy to other texts and contexts has in itself the potential to exclude and to make impossible the revelatory reading of the historicity and communicative functionality of texts produced within other communicative contexts. The theater, as spectacle, is made of actions and words that fly, just like the memories that transmitted by the voice; they are not a document that stays. Can it, then, propose social or artistic transformations in such transcient conditions? Thinking about this question we have written this essay, dedicating the first sections to the methodological aspects of the problem and the last ones, to the ideological and educational fundamental aspects. We follow here the dramatic and scenic proposal of Augusto Boal, who has made a great contribution to political theater.

In 1984, the city of Córdoba hosted and produced the first Latin American Theater Festival, interpreted by many people as a political-cultural manifestation that transcended the theatrical field. Made official by the local government, it was associated with a euphoric climate that hoped to leave behind the authoritarian past, and thus the festival highlighted the aspects that were possible as a result of the recovery of democracy, such as freedom, the occupation of public space and the participation of those who returned from exile. One of its objectives was also to achieve the opening of Córdoba to the world and, above all, to Latin America, making strong references to identity and regional integration. This article examines artistic and cultural practices in the context of democratic restoration, particularly the experience of the first Latin American Theater Festival (I Festival Latinoamericano de Teatro - FLT). We analyze some plays that were part of the official grid (Accions by La Fura dels Baus of Spain and the well-known rock opera El espectáculo va a comenzar from Córdoba, Argentina) as well as two street experiences linked to parallel grid. We use an approach that recovers the contributions of recent and cultural history and a corpus based on press and documentary sources.

The dramatic work of Peruvian playwright Víctor Zavala Cataño (Huamantanga, 1932) provides a proposal of vindication of Peruvian peasantry based on a Marxist reading of the Andean reality. Through the analysis of his transcendental volume Teatro Campesino (1969) and the later Teatro popular I (1984) this contribution traces the ideological and artistic traits of these texts. In this sense, two different aspects should be pointed out: on the one hand, the portrait of the indigenous peasant as an autonomous political subject, who is willing to react against the source of his and her oppression in a revolutionary way. On the other hand, it highlights Zavala's efforts to adapt Bertolt Brecht's teachings to the Peruvian context to build his political and artistic discourses. Therefore, his plays are a link with previous indigenista Peruvian literary tradition, using mainly the dramatic work. The importance given to the indigenous peasant in Zavala's work happens to be a breakthrough in the Peruvian theatrical tradition, and takes a path that many authors and theatrical groups will thoroughly follow in the years to come. In 1973, Rodolfo Walsh's Operación masacre moved from the book to the stage, in a play scarcely known by the critics. It was performed in Montevideo under the direction of Jorge Curi, and it is the object of the present paper. Firstly, we place Operación masacre within the artistic Latin American movement of the time, which was progressively politicized in the 60s and 70s, as the history of Walsh's text clearly shows. Secondly, we explain the relation among Curi's work and some traditions and conceptions which prevailed in the Latin American theatre, focusing on two figures, Bertolt Brecht and Peter Weiss, whose artistic projects are recovered in the theatre version of Operación masacre. Thirdly, we propose an analysis of Curi's play, focusing on changes of meaning in the story of the massacre when it is performed on stage. We show that the book–theatre passage turns Operación masacre into an event that inevitably comes to an end, although it represents the violent past of Latin America in the early 70s, interpreted by multiple bodies and voices.
