The volume provides a unique view on multidimensional crises, their interplay, and possible resolutions for sustainable life patterns and is therefore broadly related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Traditional unidimensional and technocratic strategies often fall short. Ultimately, people, their behavior and their habits are at the source of many problems. Therefore, it is imperative to take people, their multifaceted nature and the necessary learning and educational processes into account when striving towards a better life for everyone. The book takes a holistic approach to sustainability. Acknowledging the Brundtland definition, that sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, the book is specifically concerned with the ethics of contemporary social and environmental sustainability activity and thinking. It is concerned with the role of institutions?both local and global in achieving sustainability initiatives. All twelve chapters extend sustainability?conceptually, empirically and theoretically, and in doing so provide insights into linking local and global sustainability. The book refocuses sustainability as a series of interwoven and dynamic relationships, backed by just ethical decision-making, which begin locally, and reach out to impact the global level.

Lebanese Parliamentary elections of June 2009 appear to have established a polarization between "the pro-western" majority, and opposition considered close to the syrian-iranian axis. We must remain cautious about these recent political evolution in a country accustomed to reversals of alliances, and it appears therefore appropriate to wonder about its durability. To better evaluate this prospect, a development will initially be reserved to the alliance tied within the opposition since 2006, between the Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement of Michel Aoun. For "the majority", it would be wrong to declare victory too soon, since without the support of Walid Jumblatt, the druze leader, it could become very weak, as he has gradually taken away from his old friends.
